BDS 6 inch Lift.

    So I bit the bullet and bought a 6 inch BDS lift for my taco. I also got a set of 315/70 R17s to go with it. Im running stock FJ crusier rims right now from the first or second year they were out. Ive been reading that you need 4.5in back spacing. I know enough about all this to get myself in trouble. So are my current rims gonna work? And if not I saw a pair by fuel I liked. What offset or back spacing do i look for when ordering? Also if anyone else has done a BDS kit how hard is the install? Are there any problem areas post install to look out for? Im reading about this shudder in first gear kinda got me spooked.

    The install is fairly involved, and it requires cutting out your stock front crossmemeber. If you are fairly good with tools, you could try the install with yourself and a friend, but most have a shop install it.

    The FJ wheels are between 4.5 and 4.75 backspacing from what I found in a quick google search.

    Your current rims (with "0" offset) are going to cause your new tires to rub. If you like the looks of your fj wheels and want to save some coin, you can install wheel spacers that mount between your wheel and axle to give some added clearance. I just put 18" xd wheels with 4.5" backspacing on my taco and the 35's fit in perfectly with just minor trimming.
    As far as post-lift shutters, I installed a 6" pro comp on my 2012 last week and fortunately have zero issues. It seems to be one of those "hit or miss" situations. If you get shutters, there are a few steps to start taking.. First (and probably cheapest) you can install a cb drop kit, to decrease the angle of your rear drive shaft. Then you could consider axle shims, and if you are still having driveline vibrations you might look into a solid driveshaft.
    Or, you could find a local customs guy and have them install the lift for around $500 and get a warranty on their work (the guy that did mine gave me a 50,000mi warranty).

    Where did you get your info that the FJ wheels are zero offset?

    And if they are zero offset, they would be 4.25" backspacing since they are 7.5" wide. So they would more than clear the requirement.

    Poor choice of words, by "zero" i meant "factory" and i assumed that were the same backspacing as the wheels that came off of the taco. Posted without research, my bad. lol

    The website says you have to run 18's or larger has anyone run this lift with stock 17's and wheel spacers?

    Yes, I would recommend spidertax 1.25" wheel spacers. It can be done

    I installed the lift myself with just your basic tools. Just take your time when doing so. The reason they recommend 18" wheels is because you mount the tierod the opposite way on the new spindle. You will probably have to run spacers if sticking with a 17" wheel. Glad to see more people getting the bds lifts.
