Since we're on the subject of oil changes.......

I have no more free oil changes left so I'll be doing my own from now on but I have some questions.

    1. I want to change out the plastic filter housing for a metal one. Can someone give me a part number? There seems to be more than one available.
    2. I also want to install a drain valve. Ditto as above.
    3. Is a regular spin on canister filter an option?

    TIA

^^^^^^ This here. This has been my experience. Repairs are professionally done and you are looked after like family. It's comforting having a trusted Mechanic. They did my first 1,000k break-in oil change and new recent Toyo AT3's installed replacing 1 year old Factory Firestone's.

    :)

Funny, and true. No one hand-turns wrenches anymore, it's straight to the power tools no matter the size or condition of what they are turning.

Was watching a popular youtube car channel the other day and they were tearing an older vehicle down to repaint. Seems like they were breaking just about every 3rd screw or bolt. Of course, they are whizzing away with a Milwaukee FUEL on EVERYTHING. If they'd started some of those by hand they would have saved all that drilling and tapping time later.

I learned this lesson the hard way btw.

Is it difficult to use the Fumoto drain valve with the TRD skid plate as far as access?

No, access is built into the skid plate, at least for second and newer...

I should clarify, but a Civic's skid plate is nowhere near as tough as a Tacoma's. Although it's metal (better than my Focus' felt under tray), it's so thin and optimized for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency that it's flimsy. I've heard stories of dealers forgetting to screw in the last two screws on the front, causing the plate to fall off when driving. 20220219_211408.jpg

Maybe I should buy a Tacoma. If only the market wasn't so crazy...

After reading through the last 5 pages — I can echo that I’ve had similar very disappointing experiences with the Toyota dealerships here in the Austin metro. My old 2016 TRD-OR I had bad experiences with Toyota Cedar Park and Round Rock delivering it back to me with missing wheel center caps, cross threaded my TRD Pro skid, improperly patched tires, and other really poor craftsmanship. It got to the point when I’d only work with managers and demand that the shop foreman is the only one that is allowed to work on my truck.

Fast forward to this new ‘21 TRD Pro I bought a year ago; I took it in for its first oil change at 5K miles last summer to Toyota of Round Rock because it was “free” and I wasn’t relishing the thought of doing an oil change in my garage when it was 105 outside and super humid. Well they put the wrong weight oil in the truck, jammed the filter drain hatch, didn’t install a crush washer, and put the skid hatch on upside down. Ugh… never EVER again. This was a fun discovery after the fact and their attitude was, “why are you complaining if it was ‘free’?”.

When I was younger I enjoyed doing the maintenance myself, but as I get older it feels like a chore that I do myself because I don’t trust dealerships anymore. I do like seeing the condition of my oil and tires rotating myself though — plus I’d rather find a problem with my tires in my garage than on the side of the road. As a Master Tech myself in the IT field, it really pisses me off when I see other techs do sloppy work. The rookies seem to have no pride, and the regular techs seem rushed with quotas. These last few years experiences at the dealerships really reinforces that ToyotaCare is absolute crap and only made for people that have vehicles they don’t plan on keeping long term or just don’t care.

There was discussion a few pages back bout the hatch on the TRD Pro skid. I’ve done at least 8 changes between the two Tacomas I’ve owned with that skid plate is: 1. the hatch is too small, 2. the plate is very heavy if you have to temporarily remove, and 3. if oil spills out of the oil filter it makes a royal mess that takes 30 min to clean up. I’ve learned to make my peace with it. The truck overall is very straight forward to do oil changes with, but it just adds an extra layer of complexity with the skid hatch.

Toyota of Cedar Park is the best in Austin, and yet they scratched the shit out of my transfer case when fixing and sealing it.

I'm at the point now that I won't even go in for a recall or warranty work. All regular maintenance I can do myself and even it's 100F outside, I rather suck it up and do it knowing it's done right rather than losing sleep over someone else's work. Plus money saved.

If I do end up needing repair done, I'd pay out of pocket for someone who's experienced and passionate about their work. I match or beat whatever the dealership labor rate and I encourage them to be careful and thorough and not rush anything.

Luckily Toyota's rarely need repairs if maintenance is done right, unless you buy the first year production of a new product life cycle, then plenty of things can go wrong during warranty period

This ^^^ I was traveling through and found a small garage in Morro Bay, CA. Awesome people, wanted $75 for a 10k service (oil change + multi point). Ended up supplying my own filter and oil and they charged me $35.
I’m a qualified mechanic but was traveling and needed them to do it for warranty purposes… wish I lived near them…
