We spent a week on Ocrakoke Island NC and obtained an ORV beach permit.
We hit the beach for seven straight days and never had an issue even in some pretty loose sand at the access points.
It was interesting to see so many people get stuck because of vehicle choice, a stock minivan is probably not the best choice. Anyway, the truck did great and we had a blast.IMG_20180627_095615120_HDR.jpg IMG_20180627_095542974~2.jpg IMG_20180623_102024563.jpg IMG_20180629_203914868.jpg [ATTACH[/ATTACHIMG_20180627_095542974~2.jpg IMG_20180623_102024563.jpg

I dont know if its vehicle choice. I've seen everything from an Acura MDX to Subaru Crosstreks on the beach with no issue I've also seen lifted Jeeps on 35s stuck. It's the driver. But I agree my truck has no issues in soft sand when aired down.

There was an area through the beach access point that the crossover and mini vans ran out of clearance because of deep powdery sand.
Your right about the driver side of it, the reality of it is, anyone can get stuck, that's where proper recovery equipment is important.

Looks like a great time though. I need to take a trip out there soon. Grew up in NC all my life and have never been to the outer banks. How much were the permits?

Good to have those traction boards/mats just in case (like you have). I drive on Carova every year when I visit the area. No permit needed to just drive, but this year they started implementing parking permits. You just have to watch out for those big trucks softening the sand in order to get people stuck so they can pull them out for a fee.

Ocracoke is one of my favorite places to go...In the many years that we have been going, the Tacoma has never let me down on the beach....seen lots of people get stuck, helped a lot of people get unstuck, and am blown away at the level of stupidity/rudeness from those that I have helped.

Nice photos OP. you getting me fired up for our trip in August. Will certainly being going to Ocracoke to try out the new brewery, and of course hang out at Zillies... Hope you had a great trip.

Y'all are lucky you can drive on the beach. There are very very few places you can do that in California.

Were you running in 4 hi the entire time? Did you have any issues with the traction control light coming on when you were crossing some of those deeper ruts?

This thread is well timed. I’m considering taking my truck down this summer. Thanks for the input.
