Texas heat sucks dick! Nothing I can do about the weather but there is something I can do about my trucks air conditioning. I’m on a quest for at least 35-37 degree air. My old first gen extended cab would blow 33 on the highway. I have a dcsb with a 4.0. I got some basic temp readings today.
    Idle was about 55 degrees
Stopped with engine rpm raised to 1500 got down to 44.7 degrees
Cruising the highway at 65 mph with engine rpms just shy of 2000 I had 45 degree air. All of this is on the max blower speed, yeah I know it’s suppose to be taken on the next to highest setting but this is texas. My goal is to have 37 degree air in stop and go traffic with an ambient temp of 97 degrees or above.

I know the ac clutch cuts out atound 2k. If you can do this I’m very interested, however I’m in SC. It gets FN hot here also and haven’t been hot after doing basic opening windows when I just start driving after being parked then closing them after the hot air is gone. I suppose you could change the resistance on the resistor on the evaporator, but it may cause it to freeze.Maybe change the charge making the temp lower than normal in the evap but possibly cause freezing. If you want to work together on this PM me. I work with industrial chiller and Hvac units. From your posts I know you work with automotive units, maybe together we can figure something out.

    You have ALLDATA?

Check TSB 0034-18 under a 2015 Tacoma 4.0L, they have a condenser fan fix (add on electric) for poor performance at idle as well as baffles around the radiator/condenser to help with air flow.

This TSB just came out in May of this year.

Just read it. I think I can make it better. If I can get it down to 37 I would be happy.

Any chance someone could post TSB 0034-18

toyotaproblems.com - a freebie - goes thru 2014 for Tacoma - google shows nothing for this new TSB - as stated above - it's brand new.

    Thanks.

Other than adding an electric fan at the condenser, what ideas did you have in mind?

I was thinking about getting really creative and adding a rear unit under the back seat or behind my rear seats. But that will be in the future. I’m gonna try for the electric fan and seal the Space between the radiator and condenser.

This might be a slight pain in the balls as I think the evap core temp sensor on a Tacoma is actually inserted between the evap core veins. I know it was on a 4Runner I replaced the evap core in a couple years ago.

I understand the evaporative compression refrigeration cycle to some degree but as we all know, the idea is to remove heat from the system via the condenser. Yes, stating obvious here.

The compressor compresses the coolant, raising the temperature of the coolant above ambient temp. For heat transfer, you need a temperature differential (Fourier). You remove thermal energy, drop the pressure, then the temperature drops along with it (ideal gas law, PV=NRT).

Would installing a larger capacity condenser work? I know it can be done in theory, but the idea would be for the hot coolant to spend more time in the condenser so more thermal energy could be removed.

The system would hold more coolant, but you re-fill the system on pressure, not volume.

    Something to think about anyway???

Would love to see it get under 40 F. I recently was talking to folks on here about trying to increase the a/c performance. Found out you can slap a fan on the A/C condenser/radiator but that only helps when you are not moving.

Bebop, you gotta try this out man!! I've been thinking about this for a couple of years now. Just too busy and lazy to seriously consider it. The old 70's Ford LTD's would freeze your nuts off and if I remember correctly, they had huge condensers. Of course, they probably had huge compressors and evaporator cores too.....

Well there is a huge empty space in the bed of the truck. Seems like a perfect spot to install a god a/c.
