Ok I stayed with the keep it simple program
SS 11 gauge rectangular tube with 3/16 SS angle iron cut as the lip mount
    Yakama Cargo carrier .

I am going to mount gas can carriers on the side where the gap is between the cargo carrier

I know the bars will support at least 500 pounds -- more than I will need
Blue cable to prevent it from walking away

    Patent pending

    You may be right

But I have never had a mod fight me so bad - I was glad to be done with it

    First I started with Alum
    60 grade T 6
    then
    70 grade
then I went to Stainless Steel 316
    Then 304 grade
then I had a devil of a time with the weld ....... don't ask
    ...............

It turned out good in the end .............
    in the end

For some who may wonder the cargo separator is there for when I go shopping in good weather to prevent stuff from slopping around between it and the tail gate

Nice work, I have a set-up like that but I used 1 1/4 pipe as the cross bars.

Its a slow project still need some angle and get it welded up.

Cut the pipe halfway so it will sit on the angle when I get that.
