You mean before the carbon fiber cracks or springs squat? Don't know what official specs are, but my experience going to the scrap yard, at about 500-600lbs, OEM springs start to squat. I wouldn't put more that 300lbs on the tailgate, I think 250 is Toyota's limit, but my generator weighs little over 300lbs and tailgate holds it, barely. If your loading something like a bike or quad, remove the tailgate and put ramps on the bed to load it.

If you are carrying bags of sand just spread them out. If you are moving your anvil collection put a 3/4 sheet of plywood down. Don’t drop an anvil directly on the bed, it’s fiberglass.

You might be mixing up GVWR with 'actual weight capacity of the bed'. These would be 2 different things since GVWR is how much total weight the entire truck is rated to haul (regardless of where that weight is located on the truck).

Yeah I thought bed payload would have to be adjusted based off of the weight of everything in the truck including cab size, passengers, fuel, gear ect... to stay under total payload capacity

Depends on the weight, as stated. Dont be an azz...

It's a fact! Tailgates bend under load! Look it up. Or just overload it...

With airbags I've hauled 1600 lbs of pavers evenly spread with some building materials on top of that. So let's round up to 1800-2000lbs. Did that 7times, each trip is 2 hr drive. Just don't tailgate or expect to corner like a Porsche. E rated

Drove from WY to CT nonstop last year with 8 antelope (butchered) and 4 mule deer + 4 guys and gear...no airbags that trip. She was in full squat mode.

The air bags will help to level out the ride, but remember that GVWR is basically "the maximum weight the frame and engine and transmission components are designed to move in a safe and controlled manner". You obviously don't want to haul that much on a regular basis, but if you did then everything would wear out a lot faster (u joints, driveshaft splines, ball joints, etc.)

The Tacoma can tow more than it can haul, so if you have to carry a lot of weight, it's usually less than $100 to rent a nice 7ft u-haul trailer for a day.

A little something every chance we get.
Let's see. I pretended this is a half ton more than once. 50 paving stones on a pallet, ~500 Lb. 1/4 pallet of St. Augustine, no pallet, ~500 to 800 Lb. Plenty of loads under that, but close. I bought it as a 10 year old truck, and it rode like what I remember. My service records show nothing as far as shock/struts, but the rear leafs WERE replaced about 30K miles ago. So, now it rides more like a Chris Craft, and the replacement shocks and strut assemblies are in the garage waiting for cooler weather. I'd consider it a 3/8 ton truck, in American speak.

    The pavers.

    The sod.

Example of other stuff. 20' tree and garden & pond plants. Lot's of cedar fence, 2x4 and normal load.

Well, you can haul almost anything....once. I's sticking with calling it a 3/8 ton for an understandable regular load. I once went to the cement place that will dump whatever you want in the back of your truck, with my old faithful (long gone) 88 Toyota Xtra Cab. They "gently filled it over the top" with sand so I could make a big tetherball pit for the neighborhood kids out it the field. The front wheels barely touched the ground all the way home - on the frontage road! I swear it looked at me cross-eyed for a month. Seriously, my big loads handled fine, driving like I was hauling one. But you can't do that all the time. Someone said they will tow more than they will haul, and that is the third time I read that tonight, in different threads.
