    Hi guys,

I moved dirt over the weekend and I must have hit the bed with the shovel a few times and chipped the bed at a couple of spots. I don't care about the look but I was just wondering since it took some of the black coating off is it something that will dig through over time exposing the fibers like that?

I was thinking of buying an epoxy to put just to glue everything and to stop the water from going in.

    Thanks.

The composite beds are ridiculously weak and gouge easily. Get a rubber bed mat. The OEM ones are well made, tough and inexpensive.

I'm sure I don't use my truck bed as heavily as others might, but I still had a shit ton of bed scars. Don't worry about the pretty shiny coating where you chipped it up. It isn't going to accelerate the degrading of the fibers at all.

+1 on the OEM bed mat. I have a gouge thats at least 12 inches by 1 inch in the bed and then goes across the tailgate its been there for 3 years got the mat right after I scratched it moving the engine block for my 67 Olds.

Funny thing is that I have a bed mat but I took it before putting the dirt it thinking that I might damage and put a hole in the mat, lol. The main purpose that I had bought the mat was for the stuff rolling around in the bed.

When I haul anything like firewood, bricks, or a yard of dirt, I always put down a tarp over the bed mat. Bed still looks brandnew. I like to use a 6x8 tarp. As you dig dirt out, you can pull the dirt to the center of the bed.

That is also what I do. And when you get down to a reasonable pile left you can just drag it out.

Do you have to worry about the bed mat flying out while driving?
I've seen the mod where you can bolt it down, but is it needed?

Will the bed mat cause the bed to rust if water gets trapped underneath it?

Composite materials do not rust. Like plastic.

I drive on the freeway all of the time and it never moves. I think people bolt them down to prevent theft.

My bed is composite, there's no metal under mine. Matter of fact, if I crawl under the bed, I can just see the black composite.

The Toyota mat is thin, but I doubt it will blow out.

I got a Horse stall mat from tractor supply. I promise it will not blow out. It is about an 3/4 inch thick, is heavy ( 100 Lbs) and it only cost 39$.

I took it that he gouged the plastic bed with the shovel. But no worries, it won't rust at all. :) But they DO scratch. Most people get the rubber bed mat because of things sliding. I thought the heavy tree in the pot would stay put because of the weight. But it was a different story once I had to step on the brakes fast. Good thing my window didn't break.

I've never seen the OEM Mat in person.
Pictures online makes the OEM mat appear thinner.

    Thanks for the correction. :)

Oz is correct, mat won't blow out. I don't see why the bed is weak because it scrapes and scratches. It's no big deal unless you're into the aesthetic appearances of a new truck bed.
