Hmmm. I just had mine installed today and found that I need to open only 1/3 of the OEM tonneau cover in order to flip the bed extender out. I have the "newer" D-shaped one as opposed to the "older" U-shaped one. Yours appears to be the newer version as well. Not that it matters at this point, but just curious as to what the difference might be?

maybe my dealer mounted them too far forward? its close to being able to open with 1/3, but not quite there.

there are adapters that make it so you do not have to open the tonneau. they work great, I just bought them from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/AMP-Research-...&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

no new drilling needed, they bolt right to where the stock holders are and take about 5 minutes to install.

A bed extender looks like a good option to divide, but:
    (a) How easy to remove if you need to get a refrigerator in?
    (b) Holes/other mods needed to install?

They seem to have a strange shape, why not rectangular? I have a long bed - isn't there more distance between the wheel wells and the end of the tailgate than a short bed?

How much more bed length does one of these add with the tailgate down?

I still have my bed ext. from my ranger and I use it at the cab end of the bed, it fits snugly between the wheel wells and with my Encore bed coverI can back flip the cover or lock it. It's like having a big trunk.

Yes that's what I was looking for, which I think is a much better design. Unfortunately it doesn't fit Tacoma. From the questions/reviews on Amazon page I think it's for Fords although I don't see how anyone knows, there's nothing about what it fits in the description.

Nevermind, according to RealTruck.com it is available for Tacoma.

Still not getting the pointy version design, which seems to waste a lot of space. I thought it might be for the wheel wells but it doesn't seem necessary to bend it inward like that.

I bought the Ford Ranger one for 75 bucks. Our Taco beds are 1.5 inches wider. The Ford bolts are 75 each, so I just ground the flats off carage bolts and drilled some holes on the ranger. Those angles might be to clear the wells when it's flipped back.

I'd highly recommend getting the quick release mounts.

I have these on mine which lets me pull the extender without messing with the tilt. I bought my extender so I could carry a snowblower without having to remove the tonneau cover in the winter. However, I'd be unable to tilt the extender far enough to remove it because of the snowblower. Those mounts let me pull it in and out without worry.

I used nuts and bolts to mount mine rather than sheet metal screws.

How awkward to put on/off or pivot in or out with a shell on? I mean the rectangular type not the 'Sport"

Bolt are 75 cents or $?
I don't think it's the wells, which are 25" from the end of the bed on my long bed. The tailgate is only about 21".

Having a shell does not make the operation awkward at all.
