I apologize if this is already covered somewhere, but I couldn't find what I'm looking for after a few searches.

I want to remove the outlet/cubby in the bed and bolt in a piece of sheet metal, so I can mount a heater to it.

There's the nuts and bolts around the outside obviously, but how does the outlet wiring disconnect? Want to avoid breaking any plastic tabs and stuff. Can't really tell what's going on since it's a bit of a tight spot, so I'm hoping for a little guidance before I get going on it.

Any threads, pictures or advice would be appreciated, thank you.

5KW at 12V?? That would be 416.7 Amps if it’s electric heater, sketchy! Even a 5KW hear pump doesn’t make sense for a vehicle and 12V.

True! I wonder if it would be better to use a low amperage 110V since it’s already wired for that.

Its a diesel heater, the 12v is just for the fan and glow plug.

Looks like it burns fuel of some sort. I’m guessing the 12v is just to ignite it. Also guessing 5kW is just the same as 17k BTUs?

It's supposedly 5kw of heat or about 17,000btu which is almost the same as the bigger Mr. Buddy heater on max. It's actually a pretty minimal draw once it gets going. The glow plug pulls around 10amps @ 12v for a few minutes to get a flame going. Then its just the fan and the fuel pump running until you shut it off and the glow plug comes back on to burn off any leftover fuel.

    This is pretty interesting.

What are you keeping in the bed that you want it heated? Dogs? Yourself?

Just need to have the exhaust outside the vehicle and a carbon monoxide detector for good measure. Lot of good info on these, they're really common in campervan builds. Great source of dry heat

Yeah the bed is going to be my home for the winter if everything works out. Planning to head west for some snowboarding.

For the sake of getting enough "messages" on here to post a for sale ad (50), I'd like to comment on some things in this article.

It says the Chinese heaters are as cheap as $270 but I got my 5kw heater with remote start for $110 on Amazon and there are some 8kw heaters on there for under $100 with good reviews

It also questions the reliability of the Chinese heaters. Although I'm sure there's some that just straight don't work, the 5kw I bought from the seller "Happybuy" has about 40 hours of running on the bench with no issues. And my buddy ran a 5kw from ebay in his E-series campervan for hundreds of hours at a variety of elevations with the only issue being a melted fuel line due to improper install.

XOverland runs the insanely expensive Webasto, similar to the Erberspacher D2 referenced in the article, in their Arctic series. I'm sure it is in some way better than the Chinese ones, but when you can buy 19 Chinese 5kw heaters for the price of one name brand 2kw one, the price is just too damn high.

For $110 you might want to buy a spare .
