    Every piece of electrically powered gear has the voltage and current ratings on a tag somewhere on it.

    A simple little formula to remember.

    P=IE or Power in watts(P) = Current(I) x Voltage(E).
    Or P/I=E or P/E=I

    400Watts/120 Volts= 3.33 Amps. That is the max you can run out of the outlet at 400W.

    100W setting you are looking at only running .83 Amps.

    People will try to run power tools off the thing and wonder why the minute they fire it up it dies. Well you take a drill or saw that draws 8 amps at 120 volts simple math will tell you that you are trying to pull 960 watts out of something designed for 400 watts.

    Thank you! about time someone actually used math for this:rolleyes:
    It's simple as I=p/V

    When the truck is in park the inverter will produce 400 Watts

    I=400/12
    current= 3.33 amps
    This will get you well... not much. a charger, coffee pot. Probaly the most usefull thing is a work light.

    as far as having 2 batteries:
    2 batteries do not equate to more juice. The battery's would be wired in parallel which would give you the same 12V. If they were to be wired in series the 24V would fry your truck. If the truck is running the alternator charges your battery anyways. I sure hope your alternator can charge your battery faster than your 3.3Amps degrades it.

    ----|l------|l------- <---- This would be the 2 battery's wired
    l l in series. This would produce 24V
    l l and blow every fuse in your truck
    ----/\/\/----------- due to the increased current V=I/R

    ---|l----- <----- This is two battery's wired in
    -------l l---- parallel (IIRC how most dual
    l ---|l----- l battery's are set up)
    l l
    l------- /\/\/-------

    the inverter will shut off when the voltage gets to low. there will be just enough power in to start the engine. i mean just. every item has a power rating on it in watts. it is stamped right on it. there is a lot of stuff you can run on the inverter. most stuff would not go over 150 watts. the only items you can't run is anything with a heating element or a electric motor, except a drill or dermal. as for how long the battery will last, if you are just using it to power a charger for a phone or to run a radio, no problem for over night. a small tv and dvd, several hours.

    I'm thinking of adding a second battery and a true sine wave converter, so that I can run two laptops during trips, etc. I have no idea to accomplish this goal and would like lots of input on how to do this! Thanks.
