I feel like .125 thick aluminum backing plate is the way to go for mounting anything to the bed rails. It's light, relatively cheap and easy to screw or bolt just about anything to. That's what I used for my cup holders so that I wouldn't be clamping on the plastic of the holder itself. I'm kind of known for over-torquing things out of habit. As a machinist, work holding for heavy cuts is one of those situations where under-torquing is downright dangerous.

That's pretty much what I used. I just threw them on there and they work great

Thanks again Kevo these cupholders are perfect... they are big enough to hold a tumbler or coffee mug and sturdy enough to hold beers without wobbling and they fold and stay shut. Awesome addition to the rig. One more question: I am now looking for a low small low profile mesh/nylon bag or sleeve to go where my little sleeping bag stuff sack in the picture is hanging... I want to be ale to stash keys, bottle opener, wallet, whatever in there. Any ideas on small slim storage accessories? As you can see I already have the big elastic cargo nets and those are great for jackets, pillows air mattresses and big things, but not good for little things you want to stash and access easily... thanks again for the great cupholder suggestion.

Not that I can think of at the moment. I put some magnets inside of the cup holders to make them more secured when driving. They tend to open up on bumps. I got them at Lowe's.
