So I’m looking for bed caps for a long bed. I am trying level out the top of the bed so I can seal off the camper better. Right now I have a 3rd gen contractor she’ll and spend a ton of time on dirt roads with predictable results with dust. I know about the KB Voodoo rails I’m just wondering if that is my only option or if there are others I haven’t seen

Consider that all shells made for the Tacoma are designed to sit on the OEM bedwall tops, not KB Voodoo rails. This is a structural issue.

I focused oninteusion under the plastic bed rail caps. Remove, spend some quality time with some 3/4 or so foam weartherstrip, and caulk on top of the front bedrail cap where it interesects with the side bedrail caps. I have some pics Ill try to post for reference sometime soon.

Consider next that the tailgate surround and where it mates with the cap door is the major intrusion area for dust. That is where sealing efforts should be focused.

I've seen where someone has taken off and use bed liner on top. I want to say @HomerTaco did this but I'm not sure. it was him.

I sealed off under the bed rails, the gaps at the front and the tailgate and I’d say about 90-95% of water and dust intrusion is gone. Haven’t even done the cubbies yet but I’m pleased with the results.

KB Vodoo is the only one making bedrail caps as far as I know and from what I’ve seen they seem to rust pretty bad.

this is 100% not true. There is nothing structural about the bed rail caps. They are just flimsy plastic that sits on top of the metal bedside.

when I installed my wedge camper I just removed the bed rail caps and sealed directly to the metal bedside.

the biggest issue with sealing out water and dust with the bed rail caps installed is that they make the bedsides higher than the front of the bed leaving a large gap at the front that needs to be filled.

I dunno if they used to make steel ones, but mine are very definitely aluminum.

I just looked at their website, looks like they did switch to aluminum so disregard the rust comment. Now I wish they still made them for 3rd gen!

My shell isn’t for a 2nd gen it is flat across the bottom and not designed to fit the bed but it is set up perfectly for how I use it except for the dust thing.

That is not what I meant. I meant that the bottom edges of aftermarket fiberglass shells are designed with a curve to bear their weight on those OEM plastic caps. Putting that design on top of a flat aftermarket surface would cause stress on the fiberglass shell.

Definitely get them OP. I put them on before putting on my camper, and they are awesome. KB Voodoo has a discount code for TW members too, if you message them.

And no, they are not structural at all. If anything just a little stronger than OEM because they're aluminum. 2nd gens bed caps are known to deform under shells of any kind

I used KBVoodoo bed rails as part of the numerous mods I had to do in fitting my fairly rare Gen 1 Mountain Top checkerplate aluminum tonneau onto my Gen 2. I'm happy with the results -- I love this tonneau -- and the KBVoodoo rails were an essential part of getting a flat perimeter around the Tacoma's bed.
