I do not think those are powder coated - seems like a thin layer of black paint is applied. Regardless, either the coating batch was bad or the surface prep was not done correctly. A small scratch is not going to cause that level of damage.

If Toyota refuses to address it, document your requests to the dealer and corporate with images and dates, get the parts removed, powder coated, placed back on, and sue them in small claims court for the costs + court costs. You may not get a dime, but if you can document failure to make the part correctly and what it costed you to repair, you have a case.

It does seem that that part can be removed pretty easily... https://parts.olathetoyota.com/auto...as-engine/body-cat/front-and-side-panels-scat

I'm actually investigating lemon lawing this truck, this will pile on top of my numerous issues and unresolved problems.
Thanks for your input! I'm curious to see how my dealer deals with it since I've provided additional pics on the opposite side.

This is good thing. If someone gets a lemon (and they exist across all makes and brands and models) then, instead of complaining, they should get rid of it and move on. Life is short man, worry about what's important (faith, family, health) and not a truck!

Problem is I love this truck beyond it's problems, most are cosmetic but still not right. Makes me wonder the possible underlying issues beyond cosmetic. The hesitating tranny or whatever it is, is my main concern and the trucks biggest downfall, IF they can't fix it or care enough THEN i will do something. Family and friends are always more important than anything else no doubt, still need a truck tho and there's not a single truck out there I like but this tacoma.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.Cheap Chinese junk has flooded the U.S. market and manufacturers are buying with both hands. Sad to see the quality go down while prices continue to increase. Consumers keep getting hosed while "Shareholder Value " soars.

During Six Sigma training the guy laid 10 boxes of M&M's on the table and used them to explain why QC inspections were not needed, what a joke that nonsense was!

I will try to keep it short, it was about statistics and averages, the Japanese guy opened each box and counted the colors and then had us average them out. He said it was an accurate way to predict the colors in a box, I asked thru the translator if he had an 11th box to prove his point and he didn't like my challenge. After that BS he said it was only necessary to do QC checks on every 100th and if nothing is found wrong then QC every 500th, then 1000th and so on.

So as Toyota's ego grows it's QC go down, they probably don't do QC tests anymore because it's not possible they have any issues... HA

Update on this rail issue. I challenged Toyota corp. again on this, sending more pics in to prove there is corrosion (or whatever it is) all along the rail and it's NOT my fault as they claim. After weeks of waiting for a reply they denied replacing the part cause they don't want to have to replace the entire bed.
SO thankfully my local dealership who has been very helpful with alllllll my QC issues has agreed to fix the problem.

Removal of this part is obvious since we can remove the torx bolts and put a header rail there for additional tie downs etc.
Heres the number on the back, type this in on Toyota parts online and you get nothing.....

Oh well, my dealer is taking it to be armor coated..

For those who showed interest in this issue I've had, here is my update.

I'm really surprised (no wait, I always seem to have one off issues with everything in my life and it's getting old) that no one else has had this problem...

So thankfully my local dealer who is amazing to deal with and very willing to help me with issues we've had with this truck offered to pay for the repair of this part. They tried twice with corp. to have them replace it knowing full well it's a defect from production and they refused. The entire bed needs to be replaced to have this part ordered..

My dealer took it to a local shop and had it bedliner lined.. Looks great! more durable too and i ordered the header rail while I had the part off.

This looks like a defective coating to me. Worst case, you pay $50 to have em re-coated, but yeah this should be warrantied imo.

Nice! Looks good but you are the 4th one I’ve seen to have this problem. All cases show Toyota denying coverage and blaming it on the owner.
