Yeah I agree its a nice little feature they put in, although I'm yet to use it. If you were to use 1/2 as thick cross beams, whatever you lay in there will sit flush with the side ridge and also the wheel wells which is cool.

Had the same idea for my truck, except i couldn't load everything i wanted without removing the tonneau cover. Ended up buying a used 5'x10' utility trailer.

that's pretty cool; I see the tailgate at just the right angle to support the load.
I have to wonder what the siderails are made of & how strong - metal? Plastic bed insert?
Oh wait, no fishing rod so I guess it won't work. I am >200miles from a fish-bearing lake!

    :hattip:

As strong as I have needed. 12 4x10 sheets here:
I bought the rod that same day and was snapping a pic for a friend. We've been fishing out of our kayaks since then.

I ended up building something like this and it worked out great. Since I was hauling 4x8 sheets of drywall I was a little hesitant to just rely upon the two boards across the wheel wells. I don't know if it was needed, but I liked having the additional 2x4's on top running the length of the bed to help support it.

Either way, it worked for hauling 8 sheets of 4x8 drywall. I now just keep the two 2x8's and 2x4's on my lumber shelf in the garage if I need to use them in the future.

I have a Tacoma because I wanted a manual transmission and because I need to be able to fit down narrow trails. Tundra is better in basically every other way.

True, but it will haul 4x8 with zero problems. Heck, I've hauled 52in wide pallets a few times. The Taco rocks, IMHO.
