By the way, a variant of the solution above would allow you to leave the box resting on the bed floor.

You fasten the box to the rails using aluminum ) ABS flat bar cut to length and drilled. Then fasten to the box.

A couple of examples of tool bag fastened, and battery jump starter secured.

I keep my tools locked up in the cab. My big Kobalt toolbox fits perfectly behind the passenger seat.

Gas and Water, plus my trusty camp chair up front. Maxtrax normally go between the jerries and the cargo net. Race Jack on the fender.
    20180913_221123.jpg

Axe and Shovel mount on some bed rail nuts. I have a second set on the other side that holds the handle halves for the race jack

That's the storage area for my mix tape

Seriously though, a little Kidde 1 pounder. I have since moved to a full size 2.5 pounder on a Drake QR mount.

    20180907_125242.jpg

Then I moved it to the back.

I picked up a pair of the 37" contico's at wally-world, way back when I was a broke college student and I needed to transport gear on a 6-week geology field course. I paid 35 bucks a piece for them (in 2003 money), and they have outlasted every other storage box I've tried. Those things are damn near indestructible.

Now they sit in my garage for organizing/storing camp, bicycle, or dive gear. No packing or planning needed, just select the appropriate box, toss it in the bed, and go.

It's nice to have the entire bed open for hauling.

Yes, lined everything up and drilled holes in sides of the ammo cans, no regrets, best mod ever. Don’t have install pics, but it’s easy like less than 10 minutes each side

My choice. Not cheap but should last a lifetime, it's secure and very durable. Strong enough to stand on with out any concerns. Was a slight custom of one of ProTech RV boxes. Original design was 60"wide x 20" deep x 10" tall and I had them make it 56" wide.20160930_105213.jpg 20160930_105230.jpg

I use plastic storage boxes. Ziplock has some that are actually gasketed that keep dust and stuff out. My recover gear (which includes 25ft of chain) is in a action packer as it's a little tougher.

Buy a bed mat, ammo cans, and use a bungee cord or rubber strap.

Midwayusa.com runs sales on ammo cans. I use two fat .50's. I also keep a small electrical kit in a small one behind the rear seats.

How did you get around that ridiculously annoying diagonal support thing on both sides of the ammo can?

I really like this Big Ant collapsible crate. Unlike others, it can actually hold enough weight to make it useful.

With a bed mat it does not slide and is great for groceries. If I need more room it collapses.

The only place I could get it at a decent price was Northern tool, on sale + a coupon.

Costco has a similar crate and I now have 3 of them... it's a simple and solid solution for the taco... plus at $8.00 if I break it or need to ditch it because I can't squeeze the 2" collapsed unit some where, so be it.

I'm familiar with the version that Costco sells and if its the one you are talking about, kind of meant for light duty.

This one can hold like 200bs (not that carry that) and is made very well. I use the Costco one in the trunk of my BMW Z3 and it keeps my small items and groceries together.
