    @mwc273 the 6" spring ended up being 4". Everywhere I look it says it's THE spring for my aplication. Am I thinkin about this wrong? Where do you start/end the measurement? Static ball on the whip to the spring is 102" + 4" spring is 106" + 1.25 mounting stud is 107.25". I'm told I can tune by reducing the length of the cable (it's a solder joint). Does that make any sense :)

    Back in the day just about all commercially available antennas tuned that way.. I like the new Firesik II screw in tips
    Too easy! Any 102" I"ve ever messed with started off long.

    I'm gonna get the 4' Firestik antenna combo. It's $55 for everything I'll need to use the tailgate mount. Comes with an 18' cable which is why I'm afraid it's short.
    My cheapo Walmart magnetic advertises 12' and it's not exactly slack when routed so as to not be in the way and still connected to my radio. Radio is velcroed to the driver's footwell carpet just below center console plastic.

    Wonder how I would shorten it. Cut the static ball off the top, cut out a length the weld it back? Not sure if I can even weld SS in the yard. Can at work I guess.

    OK...I got a few pointers from a pro....Not sure how much I remember....But we'll see Saturday.

    I now have a 28 watt radidio! It rocks! Took him all of 5 minutes to hot rod my Cobra 25XLT. (5 watts "out of the box") He checked my work on antenna tune. It was spot on. Checked ground on my antenna mount. AOK. All good. No need for a power mic. Just as I got there, he was finishing an install in a semi. He drove off just as I started putting my radio back in the truck. When I did a radio check, the truck driver was 11 miles away, in a rural area. I was "modulating" loud and clear.
