Bellhousing Identification Trouble

    Hey Everyone,

    I was wondering if I could get some help identifying what bellhousing I have on my truck:

    I unfortunately had the clutch fork pivot point break on my bellhousing (Just like on this thread).

    I sourced what I thought was the right bellhousing:

    • Toyota Part No.: 31111-35090
    • My truck details: 1999 Tacoma 3.4, 4x4, manual
      • The engine was swapped with another 3.4 at some point

    However once I compared it to mine, I found it didn't match. The main difference being that the starter is on the passenger side of the bellhousing on my truck.

    I did find some pictures on the internet of what looks to be my bellhousing:

    Any help is greatly appreciated, I come from mostly owning VW's so this is a whole new world to me.

    @Speedytech7 I seem to recall you previously answering a question just like this. The trigger for me was the starter being on the wrong side.

    @rafza did you use your truck's vin# to verify the correct part numbers? If not, try going HERE and using the vin to find the correct part number for your application.

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    Just where did you get the bell housing ? Either the one you bought had been swapped my2000 3.4 is also on the right.

    @Digiratus I tried the tool and unfortunately same part number result: 31111-35090. I originally got that part number by calling up my local dealer and doing a VIN search as well. Awesome tool though, I'll definitely be using that again.

    @Bivouac I got the bellhousing shipped from a scrap yard in Washington. The weird thing is that the part I received matches what the Toyota website is showing it should look like.

    Appreciate all the replies guys.

    I would not put too much credence in the online images that the Toyota sites use. They are notoriously bad and should not be used to determine correct fitment.

    A little research shows that the part number the local dealer gave you is correct for the 3.4L and an R150F, so that isn't the issue here. The problem is, the housing you were sent is not the correct part if it has the starter location on the driver's side instead of the correct location on the passenger side. Is that housing marked with that part number?

    Hopefully you can get your money back from that junkyard because that is obviously not going to work for your application.

    Same thing happened to my 02 with 3.4l. I assumed the difficulty I was having getting into gear was just from a need for a new clutch, still on the original. I eventually took a closer look and noticed the slave cylinder rod was sitting crooked, I was able to pull the boot and peek around the shift fork, that's when I saw the bellhousing had broke off at the fork pivot. I still need to source a replacement. New is a bit too pricey.

    I think the bellhousing you recieved may be from an earlier pickup/4runner with 3.0l. 3vz instead of 5vz.

    Yeah I believe in the 3vz trucks the front was mirror image with exhaust on the driver’s side and the front driveshaft on the passenger side so it stands to reason the bell housing would bolt to the block but the starter would be on the other side to avoid the collector for the exhaust.

    Edit: to keep the starter out of the way of the drive shaft and fuel lines - not the exhaust

    You are Correct the 3.0 Pick ups and 4Runner bell housings should work.

    I was just going to mention that I used those in my 3.4 swaps

    Op just check on the length is the same.

    The problem with using the 3vz bellhousing is that the slave cylinder and starter are on the opposite side compared to the 5vz (Tacoma) bellhousing.

    Update: still waiting on the scrap yard to see what they can do for me.

    But it seems like the picture on the Toyota website was what was tripping me up. Thanks @Digiratus for solving that, good to know not to trust part images 100%

    @Bivouac yeah I was thinking to just try the bellhousing I got, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to extend the wiring on the starter to bring it to the drivers side, and source a backing plate. Which seems like more hassle at the moment, but maybe..

    interesting when I did the 93 4Runner I never changed bell housings the starter and clutch slave are on the right

    So is my 2000 Tacoma

    That is strange. It would mean that Toyota made a change at some point. My 02 w/3.4l has the slave on the left, starter on the right.
    It also seems like the OP is looking at that replacement bellhousing upside down. I see it having a right side starter and slave positioning (post #5). To me its not so much that starter position as he says, but more so the slave placement.

    this literally happened to me two days ago as well. The pivot inside the bell housing sheared off.. same trans and year specs as you (99 SR5 4x4 5mt) I ordered the 31111-35090.. waiting for it to arrive... :\
