Giving this some thought since the Fork just pivots on that ball .

How could you even get enough leverage to break that piece off it should just Pop off the retainer in the normal course of removing the transmission .

If one gets rather forceful yanking and pulling things as is sometimes all part of the fun in most cases it is still attached .

Well I got time on my hands so I am offering my comment / opinon

Agree with others. Very unlikely that that post was just broken off by itself. If it was broken when you first brought the truck to the shop - you would not be able to drive it easily and there would likely be a loud noise from the bell housing when the engine was running.

I think it was broken during careless removal.

This exact thing happened on my truck at 310k. So yeah, this can happen -- I've experienced it.

Everything was fine, until it wasn't. I was driving home from work and noticed the clutch was feeling a bit stiffer than usual. At first I thought it was in my head, but after about a dozen stoplights the clutch was really difficult to sink to the floor. I turned off into a neighborhood that parallels the road I usually drive home because I had a feeling something was about to go sideways. Sure enough, next stop sign and I could barely press the clutch in at all. The next one, POP -- clutch hit the floor. I spent the next day replacing the master and slave, but nothing changed -- it was as if the clutch wasn't holding pressure. Bleed the hoses and it would return to normal, then as soon as it was depressed it would stick to the floor. Called my buddy over to get a second opinion, and he noticed that the clutch fork had a lot of play in it. We removed the boot that exits the bellhousing and saw that the fork was snapped off. I had it towed to a mechanic and they replaced the bellhousing. $1200 bucks. The mechanic at the shop I went to told me he had never seen that happen before.

So you would have to believe that he’d have more problems than he had especially over the 1,500m trip that was just completed??

The transmission in the Tacoma has synchros on 1st and reverse.

    The 1995-2000 R150F has a single-cone synchro on 1st, the 2001-2004 has a triple-cone synchro on 1st. Reverse uses the 5th gear synchro.

Rough handling or not I can`t see how you could manage to break that off removing the transmission.

A bad casting that cracked over a few hundred thousand miles I could understand the crack just propagated over time.

OP`s looks like it broke all at once

I know this is a couple years old but I wanted to add that this happened to my 2002 at around 210k miles. I had been experiencing difficulty shifting, especially into 1st and reverse and just wrote it off as being the original clutch. One day I looked and noticed the slave cylinder push rod angle didn't look right, pulled the shift fork boot and found the base of the fork pivot could be moved around. Not sure why, but just like the OP the bell housing had cracked where the fork pivot mounts. I'm the original owner, no work has ever been done on the transmission.
