So aside from benefits of a new cold air intake has anyone noticed any engine wear, if any, or other negative sides from installing a new intake.

i have an 06 TRD offroad, and put the TRD cold air intake system and the TRD cat back exhaust on. They have helped (over stock components) the fuel mileage (1 to 2 mpg) and midrange performance (50 to 80 mph). I use my trk for work, and see the benefits everyday. Trk has over 200k on it.

haha well yea thats how we are calculating it!
I can not confirm nor deny any improvement to my mpg's though. I'm looking into adding a CAI and a new muffler, both of which I have heard good things in the mpg area

If you lived near me I would swap out your stock intake for my CAI and TB spacer. I bought mine used and found out after opening the hood a few weeks after purchase there was a CAI in there. Have not seen the exhaust yet....I guess I should look under the truck.

I would get a drop in filter. I'm pretty sure that Chris4x4 and others have posted proof that a CAI and exhaust have marginal performance improvements at best. Save your money and get a drop in...dry drop in filters like AFE, Amsoil, etc are $40 - $60 and have higher air flow than stock. They also will not mess up you MAF sensor like oiled filters have been known to do. Just my $.02

There HAS to be some way to increase the mileage of these trucks besides driving habits. Do not get me wrong, I love my V6 Taco, and the reason I bought a V6 is because I have driven a 4 banger most of my life and wanted a truck that had som a## for towing and when I need to get around someone, which in Nashville is a lot. I am getting an Ultragauge or ScanGauge 2 to work on driving habits, but I am an EXTREMELY BUSY person and cannot drive like grandma to get better fuel mileage. I have done mods to my motorcycle and seen significant gains. Why can I not do this with my Taco? (Yeah, I know, computer vs carb)

I have owned Toyota's, Nissan's, and Honda's and I cannot believe a Japanese truck gets such s&itty gas mileage. 17 +\- MPG city? It should be 20+ city and 24-25 hwy.

Sorry. Just bitching. It is probably the gas prices that is causing it, :( As with everyone. I do have a motorcycle that will be back out soon. Maybe the winter gas blend is why I am seeing such low mileage.

I know, threads and threads on this. That is how I got here to this one.

Replace the beefy stock tires with the small skinny tires Japanese trucks were/are known for and you'll get better mileage.

Beyond that, old Nissan/Toyota/Hondas weren't as large as the modern Tacoma, and you have to factor in the added drag of the Prerunner's lifted suspension.
