Last time I had to purchase a half hog it was like 120 bucks have no clue what the going rate is these days haven't needed to purchase one in over 10 yrs. The perks of living next door to hog farmers (and no I didn't live next door to the hogs)

Usually they are slaughtered for whole hog cooking around the 120-160 total weight prior to any gutting etc. What you usually get for a half hog is around the 1/3 total weight range give or take. I bet I could find something cheaper. If guys want to do that I could arrange getting the cooker and head down early set up get a couple of other guys to help and we cook a hog and have that for supper.

Pig cooking is easy you yanks need to learn one day! So that you quit calling BBQ an event. Yeah this would be what we call a pig pickin' if we did that. So once the hog is done you just go up and grab what you want right off the hog onto your plate. There is usually an assortment of different sauces people put on the meat.

@JimboAnz the early bird crew could head down and do it. Using a gas cooker takes less time and isn't as labor intensive. It's mostly just babysitting the cooker. Now if I were to get a wood cooker we would be making charcoal the whole time and it would take anywhere from 12-16 hrs to cook not incl. getting the cooker up to temp and a lot of work to keep everything where it needed to be. Much more of an art form keeping the heat even and at a steady temp.
