Not a dumb question. The latch on the window is disabled once this mod is installed. With this mod, the window in the fully closed position is just shy of fully latched. It is still just as secure (from break ins) and weatherproof as the original non-powered window. There is no way to force the window open and there are no gaps that weather or moisture can leak through (I know there has been some confusion about this in the past).

    awsome!
I rarely use the rear window just because I am too damn lazy to open it. Think this will be my next mod :D

Hey Ben, oddball question. Did you or anyone else ever figure out if the latch can be removed for a cleaner look? I think I remember you mentioning that at one point in time. Net is too slow to go through all the pages right now.....

p.s., if there is anybody reading this who lives in northern NJ, Matamoras, PA area, or near NYC who has an AC that they'd be willing to let me look at this weekend (including remove the rear seatback to look inside and take a few measurements), that would definitely help speed up the development of an AC-specific kit! PM me if you live in one of the above areas and would be willing!

Hey Chris, no I never did think of a way to get rid of the latch. I even thought about ways to completely remove the sliding glass and replace it with a new one that doesn't have a latch, but that would be a major PITA not to mention expensive, since the glass is tempered and tinted.

Hmm. I may have to see if I can figure it out when I install your kit when I get home....

I just read a posting on customtacos where a couple guys with x-runners had the latches just fall off in their hands, said it uses the same glue as used on the rearview mirror? If thats the case...... Hmmmm ideas.....

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if there is some kind of solvent, or if even a heat gun would do anything. Hmmm.

I have a sub box that takes the entire space where the storage bins were, I had to unbolt them to install the box. Is this Mod able to be done on mine still? I sure hope so!

I had somebody else ask me that same question, and I'm looking into it. A lot of it depends on the specific sub box. I need to measure the thickness of the window motor when I get back home in a couple of weeks to see it would fit behind certain sub boxes.

Do you have a pic of your sub box that you could post? Preferably a pic that shows a cross section view of the box. That might at least allow me to tell you "definitely yes", "definitely no", or "maybe" for now.

If you mean taking the latch off, I'll bet it would be easy.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/160867-rear-window-latch-help.html

There's two small screws and some adhesive. Mine just fell off one day. I never did get bigger screws. The original stripped ones and adhesive have kept it on as long as I'm careful with the way I close it.

I keep telling myself I'll be able to get a power kit soon and it won't be necessary...

Thanks for the link... I'm pretty sure hitmans.army is talking about the part of the latch that is affixed to the sliding glass....(?) or maybe I misunderstood what he meant :notsure:

I think the recepticle part of the latch in your link above is necessary as part of the seal that keeps weather out, no?
