I've never shot a 1911, but held many and have an XD with 1911 style grip and grip safety and have shot a 92fs.
IMO, The Beretta is bulky, heavy, the grip is unnecessarily fat and awkward and the sights are funky. Also, the way the slide is designed, it doesn't leave alot of room to grip when racking. On the positive side, its easy to field strip if that's important to you and trigger in SA is very nice.
As for 1911s, when i grip one it just seems like it was designed for my hand. Everything is where it should be and it naturally aims well. Never field stripped one, but my XD I could strip in my sleep.

Also, I am of the belief that if something is great, others will copy it. And look how many times the 1911 has been copied vs. how many times the 92fs has been copied.

Take this for what its worth, hope that helps

The 92 is a sexy italian but I never liked the slide mounted safety, and it just feels bulkier in my hands than the perfect grip of a 1911 (i do have smaller hands though...). I really do like the XD and I've only shot it in 9mm but it felt very snappy to me and was harder to keep on target than a sig 226 with a heavier stainless slide which I was shooting the same day. The important thing is to hold them and if possible put some lead downrange with them and see what will work best for you application. i.e. sidearm, CC, hunting, Sporting, etc. All of them are great in their own right. That being said, I'm on the 1911 train if only because the aftermarket is the best of any pistol if you like to mod your firearm. Might I recommend a dual gold-plated set ala Faceoff!

Hahaha Awesomely terrible. There was a thread on TFR once that was a competition to make the most ricey/bling 1911 and I think a gold plated-tigerstripped one won it. Wish I could find a picture...

I carry a Springfield TRP Operator 1911 .45 ACP on duty and love it. Go with TRIPP INDUSTRIES (8) round mags and you will be dialed in. I have carried Glocks, H&K's, and a Beretta early in my career. The 1911 is the hands down weapon of my choice. It takes a bit more maintenance.... but it is worth it.

I have a Taurus 92 (9mm)and a Taurus 1911 (45). I like the 92 because it is cheaper to shoot and holds more rounds but the 1911 is the one that sits next to me on the couch(don't come in my front door) and is alot of fun to shoot.

1911. I am not a fan of the 92fs, at all.

I've made my preference known several times here- I make no apologies for being a .45 fan. I had the Beretta, and while it's a fine weapon that's easier to take down, it has the singular drawback of launching projectiles of 1/2 the weight with only a 300fps velocity gain. I don't know the energy readings off the top of my head , but I'd rather throw a softball than a tennis ball.

    Whichever you shoot the best.
The grip angle on the 1911 shoots best for me. It's like pointing my finger at the target, that's where the bullet goes.

The 1911 is the most accurate handgun I've ever shot. I've shot a few and loved them all. One day I'll get one.

I've got the 92fs and the XD40. Love them both, I'm really partial to the Beretta because that's what I carried in the Navy and I got so used to it, plus I got big hands. A lot of people do not like how big the grip is. Ammo is cheaper too.

I never did understand why someone wouldn't use a big rock they could throw accurately, instead they use a smaller rock they could throw faster;) :stirthepot:

Make sure the Springer your looking at doesn't have the glued on ejector. I'm also not a fan of the ILS mainspring housing. But that's just me. YMMV

Force=speed x mass. So a smaller faster projectile will still have plenty of damage.
