Best 0W-20

After we open a bottle of oil and don't use it all, is there a period of time where that oil will eventually go bad after the bottle has been opened?

Amsoil says their oil has a shelf life of 5 years in climate controlled area like your house. Mobil 1 says basically the same thing

 

Based on other recent friday-worthy TW threads, I have switched to using 100% Ceratec. With a 500 mile change interval. Prefiltered on my bench.

 

No. Keep it closed, shake before pouring it in, additives can settle out.

As far as 5 year for oil to go bad, it is a liability thing, not anything based on science. They do not want you to use 10 year SL rated oil in a newer vehicle calling for SP or Dexos 2 rated oil. There IS a difference between SL, SM, SN, SP, A3, A4, A5, long life, European long life rated oils.

Think about, what will break down in virgin oil, stored in the opaque container inside away from UV lights?
Coolant has far more volatile organic additives, and factory fill is rated for 10 years/100K miles, while subjected to heat and pressure.
Everybody has their comfort level, but I have used 6 year old oil without any issues. I just rotate my stock.

 

I use Mobil 1 0W20.

 

Almost 80k miles since new in one year. Your truck doesn’t care. Fresh oil fresh filter on a regular basis. Dino oil doesn’t hurt your truck. Neither does oil up to 10W50. Neither does mixing oil brands. Neither does mixing viscosities. Neither does mixing dino and synth. Neither does aging oil in the bottle. You use what you can find in South America. You change it and keep on keeping on.

Not letting what oil, viscosity, maker, brand, dino, or synth be another concern on my trip. Trucks runs fine on everything. That goes for transmission, transfer case, and diffs as well.

Well, that does it for me too! Why wouldn't I believe some guy wearing a highway worker safety vest in his garage and comparing a lawn mower engine to a modern automotive engine? I'm running straight 50w non-detergent dino oil in my Taco now, before it's too late...

They will let you assume it is Toyota branded (rebranded) oil, or if you ask them, they will sell it; "we exclusively use XYZ products". Rest assured they will price shop and change again and again if need be.

 

They should be required to use Toyota genuine motor oil

 

I work for a large dealer that has dealerships of many different brands. I don't know what our Toyota dealer uses but the Acura store that I work at uses Valvoline. Why? Because Valvoline sponsors his NASCAR teams.
I personally use Pennzoil Platinum. I worked for a Shell distributor before the dealership that I'm at now. I'm sold on the base oil made from natural gas.
P.S. Our bulk oil is Valvoline. We also carry Acura branded oil in quart bottles.
