i don't know why but valvoline is really popular for bulk oil. lots of shops use Valvoline. OTOH i never hear of anyone buying Valvoline at the store. it's always Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, or Castrol Edge.

Maybe because they save marketing and advertising costs by not having silly names like Edge and Signature and claiming that they will recalibrate your oscillation overthruster.

In comparison, look at how many different brands of differential oil they have on the shelf at your local auto chain. At mine it was only Valvoline. Becuase they don't need to attract the typical DIY motor oil changer consumer who doesn't know jack shit but is a sucker for hype.

    K&N intake tube and filter.
With my 21 SR5, I was using Pennzoil ultra platinum. I am currently using that oil for my GF’s 21 Highlander (V6 3.5L). On my 23 Tacoma TRD off road, I did my first oil change at 700 miles with Royal Purple. Yes there were metal particles when I did my first oil change, but I digress.
I would choose a good brand and go with that. In my case, Pennzoil or Royal Purple.

Your oil change intervals is what really matters. Of course I would use decent oil, not some cheap crap. I change oil every 5K miles with a new filter (OEM filter).

Have ran Motul before. It's very good. But I got a deal on it. Otherwise I don't. As it' $44 per big jug.

sounds like a waste of $35+

Of course 5K is fine for anyone to do. 5K and even 10K are general/average figures for the driving population to account for great and poor driving habits/conditions. But if you'd rather make the most out of the current oil that's in your engine now and are curious about it's life, then a single oil analysis will save you in the long run.

I never said to keep doing an oil analysis for each batch of oil that you pour into your engine. Yes, that would be a waste of time and $ lol.

EDIT: Case in point: When I owned an Acura, 5K intervals were a complete waste of time, money, and effort. A single $30 analysis saved me more $$ in the long run. And, I drove that car for nearly 200K miles. If you do the math, compare how much money is saved if you do 12K oil changes vs 5K.

So you run the Pennzoil until it starts burning oil then switch to the cheaper Supertech?

I finally had to use Amazon for my oil purchases. It seems like every time I go to wallyworld, 0w-20 are out of stock or not available in the 5qt bottles. Amazon has Castrol Edge 5qts for $23.38 if using the subscribe and save feature. A good price and delivered to my house.

I’ve probably seen over 500 oil tests from different people doing tests in different ways but always scientific in their approach and Mobil 1 hardly ever makes the top 5.
There are way oils out there.

Costco or Sam’s club. Can usually get 6 qts of Mobil One for $30-ish on sale. Just buy one when you see it on sale

Mobile has failed every wear bar test against other top oils each time they are tested.
Their additive package is mid tier.
Cold Pour point is not that great and evaporation tests are almost poor.

Valvoline, Penzoil Platinum Castrol and Amsoil all outperform Mobil 1.
Amsoil is super expensive and looking at the other oils they are all very close for 1/2 the cost.
This has one of the best additive packages out there.
If I see any test that lists Mobil 1 in the top 5 I know the test was rigged.
Mobil 1 spends a lot on advertising and has a lot of people that “believe” it’s the best but that’s not real world.

there’s more that goes on in an engine than scanning of liquid a beaker in a lab for traces of block.

vehicles that get 10k OCI have problems. 5k’s don’t.
Removed my valve covers at high miles. Engine looked brand new inside.

10k is not recommended in the professional world. 5k is.
Not to mention this being a 16-23 forum where folks spent $40k on a truck.

I wouldn’t know though I’ve only worked on thousands of cars. The guy who hasn’t would know.

10k’s are great at creating garunteed employment from people who don’t bother opening their hood

    $10k repair due to $20 skimp =

    IMG_1246.jpg

probably why Porsche people switch away from it being thin watery burning and probably why it’s $13 a 5qt and it’s generally not considered as high up there or the best
