Been wanting to get a nice sounding exhaust for my 04, nothing too loud. and I’m not good enough with a welder yet to do one myself. Anyone know a good exhaust? Thanks!

So your looking for a full exhaust then? Or taking it to a muffler shop? If you take it to a shop I really liked my flowmaster 40. Good sound but not obnoxious.

I like my stock exhaust so much I polished it up with a scotch brite pad and some nitric acid. That's my vote.

I've been happy with the JBA catback (40-9015) I installed last year. Little bit louder than stock but not annoying.

Getting ready to install this one for my 3.4, nice low sound with my 2.7. simple and enjoyable to hear while driving. I expect a little more response from the 3.4 too

Did you weld yours at the clamps? They recommend at least tack welding them but I was thinking of just welding the seams together.

I didn't, I have a stick welder but I'm still not very good so I didn't want to risk burning through the pipe. I appreciate you asking though, I've got an appointment to get some sliders welded on in early May. I'll ask him to put a few tack welds on the exhaust and hopefully prevent any future issues.

I’m getting my father in laws mig welder and I am going to do it with that. I want do a full weld and remove the clamps, but I can’t find anything that says to do it that or not..

I do like the muffler though and it was fairly affordable and easy to put on.

Good Afternoon John. That muffler looks brand new! Where do you purchase nitric acid and what does it do?

Thank you, not bad for a 24 year old muffler, eh? I bought the products from Amazon. Not to thread jack Mr. Kai's thread, but I'll just point you to this post I made about it. I'm glad I looked it up because it's actually phosphoric acid, not nitric acid. It's important to get the right type of acid so it won't strip the chromium in the stainless steel. I did not end up using the VHT Clear Coat because I heard it was stinky and it really didn't need to be clear coated. Two years later and it's still looking great, just some discoloration from the heat (purple/yellow hues).

If you end up doing this make sure to wear some old safety goggles and long dishwashing gloves as it tends to drip when you're vigorously scrubbing. The stuff I bought is gel that foams up so it's pretty easy to work with, but it will irritate the skin and is obviously bad for the eyes.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
I've just got a 14 inch Magnaflow and then dumped before the axle.

It's a little bit louder than stock, but not annoying. I feel like it must sound pretty decent since I've had quite a few people ask me what I'm running, on trips etc.

I put a Thrush Turbo muffler on mine with a turndown. It is rumbly but not overly loud.

Thoughts on a header (from LCE) + magnaflow upgrade? Worth getting both (for the sound) or just stick with the muffler only?

My thought would be the header is the upgrade in this situation, and I'd keep the stock muffler.

Hey, you asked for thoughts. :D

This is the JBA cat back muffler with TRD headers.Camera doesn’t do the best justice, and I don’t have anyone to rev it while I’m near the tailpipe. But I tried:Dhttps://youtube.com/shorts/HZ-WGCVMBV4?feature=share

I'll be honest, I'm a bit of an old man in a young body. I had the stock exhaust on my 00' 3.4 and had a downstream cat code come on. While exhaust was on my mind, being my first truck I decided to see what different sounds I could get out of it. (i had a KLX that I put a performance pipe on and loved the noise). I went down to my local redneck muffler shop, and all the guy had in stock was a flowmaster super 44. I'd heard 40's on so many trucks and cars my whole life so I said I'd take it. :D It sounded nice on startup and if you stepped on it. However, when some freak of nature caused my catalytic converter to become empty, the noise was elevated/changed a lot. People would call it more "throaty" but I didn't like the difference at all. Instead of a nice rumble, it sounds like blowing raspberries into a metal drum imho. Have fun though and find a good shop that will weld it up good. I think mine was $150 installed.

Can you weld stainless pipe with a Mig unit using flux core wire? I know they make special wire for SS but don't know how much difference it will make. I welded my cat in with flux core wire, welds look like absolute crap but they work so who cares. I need to replace cat again and may try to better job this time since cat will be quite a bit more expensive now.

I have the welding gas hook ups also but have never tried it.

Edit - read that this wire is not for magnetic SS, are exhaust systems mag SS?
