In a case like mine where I won't be adding extra weight except for about 700 lbs 3 times a year is the AAL good for that? Won't the Sumo springs supplement the weight carrying capacity?

Nope. Because of my constant load, the AALs only put me back up close to factory rake/geometry. So I’m not really ‘lifted’ like an unladen truck would be.

Icon makes the best add-a-leaf for Tacoma, they are progressive.

A standard add-a-leaf will do you fine as well.

Edit, this is an old thread, glad OP got Icon.

No. No axle wrap. No other issues with my setup either.

Dude. Look at my build. Around here, I’d say boring. Good for me.

1.5” lift, whoop. In this regard, it’s essentially stock. But good shocks (sorry, no UCAs, front reservoirs or clickers), a bit heavier coils, and the simple, cheap and easily replaceable Deaver AAL, along with Sumos, gives exactly what I need doing.

My truck is a DD - first and foremost. I haul light loads and I pull light trailers. For lack of a better term, I cross country my Tacoma. Lots. AZ is pretty darn good for that, and this setup hits the right balance for this truck.

I don’t rock crawl. I don’t race. I don’t heavy haul. I don’t pull a large RV or commercial trailer. If I did, I’d have a different truck. No problem.

It works for me, so I don’t see any bandaids here. I do see Cinder hills, though.

Sounds like the kind of use I give mine. Sounds good to me.

Do most people with an AAL such as Icons leave in the overload Or take out?

Bilstein 6112 front / 5100 rear (extended) shocks, Headstrong AAL, Firestone airbags, 4.88 gears, OME Carrier bearing drop kit, Aluminum 1/4" skids (engine to transfer). Custom sliders (1.75" HREW tube w/ 3/16" base plates). Custom front bumper and high clearance rear bumper (1/4" steel plate, 1.75" tube.) Apex 5500 winch w/synthetic line (36lbs) and required accessories for an underpowered winch (snatch blocks and extra line.) Tekonsha P3 brake controller, remote start, any-time-backup camera w/ front facing camera, Leer 100R shell (w/e-track single slot tie-down mounts for removable Yakima EasyTop.) Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.

I don't think this is a "most" or "better" question. The majority of Taco owners seem to make this choice based on the desired height/lift of the rear (as opposed to having it for extra insurance when/if they overload the truck.)

I have headstrong AAL and retained the overload spring and am generally happy (~2" lift over stock.) Occasionally I consider upgrading to a high-end leaf pack replacement but then move on to some other way to spend money. : )

For those with a cap also that installed an AAL, did you need to upgrade the rear shocks to deal with extra travel? I'm thinking about an AAL to regain factory geometry with the added weight but don't want to bite the bullet on new shocks if I don't have to.

I used stock SR rear shocks with AAL (w/overload leaf) for about a year before upgrading to extended length 5100s (I also had a cap/shell but don't think that's much of a factor here.) Worked fine for me. If you plan on doing hardcore flexin' then you should go ahead and upgrade.
