Best advice on life you have ever gotten

Don't remember who told me first; but I've come to use it often...story to follow:

"If Momma ain't happy...ain't nobody happy."

Shortly after my oldest moved out to his own apartment he was by the house for a visit, I came in from the garage and he and my wife were having a heated discussion (read argument) over something. Don't remember if I ever found out exactly what it was over but it was trivial....any how, he proceeds to try and draw me in on his side of the disagreement. Goes like this from that point:

ME: What did I teach you?
SON: If Momma ain't happy...ain't nobody happy."
ME: (Surprised he got it right on the first try...but hiding my surprise) Alright then, these days if Momma ain't happy...I'm the most unhappy guy around here. So shut up and do whatever your Momma's telling you to do!

End of argument, my world is back in peace, and most importantly...Momma is happy!

 

What is life ?

" Life is the period of time between birth and death "

 

1) You can never have too many friends.

2) (Not really advice, but a good principle) I try to make one decision a day that scares me a little. That way I'm certain I'm always growing. If you're not a little uncomfortable, you're not growing.

3) Great boss at my job in college: It's fine to make a mistake, but you'd better fix it. If you don't know how, you'd better learn from it.

 

If something bothers you, change it
If you can't change it, change your attitude

 

The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good

When I couldn't decide how to fix something my father would tell me: "Do something, even if it's wrong". Best advice I ever got.

 

I like this ^^^ I practice this every day. If it's something you can't do anything about then move on and change your attitude.

 

"Let it shit go.." (holding grudges)....I am really working hard on this one.

 

First comes your education, then comes the money, then comes the women and toys. - my dad

Walking ain't crowded - my papa

Everything in moderation - my college roomate

When in doubt, gas it out - riding buddy

Skin to win - panama beach cheer during the wet-tee shirt contests.

 

I heard this countless times growing up from my dad:

"Don't worry about the mule going blind. Just load the wagon"

 

My parents used to say this a lot when I was in trouble or being a pain in the ass.

"I brought you into this world, I can take you out and make another one just like you"

 

Same here. My dad used to say: "Your mother brought you into this world and she can take you out"

 

"serenity prayer" even if you're not religious, theres a huge message to take out of it.

 

Travel light, freeze at night -- army

Be your own best friend -- IDK

Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see -- IDK

This too shall pass -- IDK but it's true

 

Keep it shine side up dirty side down. Trucks, women whatever

 

Don't dip your pen in company ink

Don't take sand to the beach

 

From my supervsor when our officer in charge was being a douche, "Just sit back and watch - God'll get him". That has proved true time and again to the people who did me the most harm.

From a good friend whne I was grappling with my past (namely my ex wife), "Do you like who you are today? If so then be grateful for the things in your past that made you who are today".

From a leadership course, "Never react with anger". Proven true time after time.
