So all tacomas are plagued by rusty frames, dont let that influence your decision. 05-10 was covered, and now theres talk of 11-17 being covered in another thread aswell. With that aside i've heard about the v6 issues in the 05/06, but thats only v6. OP we need to know if you want 4wd, 2wd 4cyl or 6cyl.

Very good point, I thought I had mentioned that.
    4WD, manual.
I could take pro's and con's for V6 and 4banger. Probably V6 if they can get 18-20mpg on the freeway. Mostly do freeway driving, then some offroad (but mostly to get to camping sites, not rock crawlin').

4wd, manual, 4cyl in any year will be golden, its the bullet proof config, right along side the 4cyl, 4speed. I havent seen a 4cyl cyl having issues locally but i've seen a few 6cyl with problems. basically if you absoultely need a 6cyl, avoid 05-06 and the other years mentioned before. 4cyl is the exact same config in 2019's with some minor tweaks.

Would the 4cyl have any issues hitting 80 mph on a regular basis? Live in Utah and that's basically the speed limit everywhere haha

The 4cyl could do it. It'll take more time and space to get going. But I think the most important thing would be the fuel efficiency. If you plan on going everywhere at 80mph, I would imagine you won't get much better than a V6 (which at that speed/rpm is garbage). Maybe someone with a 4 cyl can chime in and let us know. I know with slightly larger and more aggressive tires, I'm lucky if I get 17 mpg on a flat surface chugging along at 70 mph.

Thank you! Yeah, my truck right now is the 4cyl 97 single cab in my picture. Generally hit 80 mph whenever I want except for uphill. But I get 20 mpg right now

yep it can handle that no problem, now that speed + towing would be hard on both engines. I get about 25mpg on the highway (~60mph) and 17-21 (depending on how much snow) city in my 4cyl 4spd

Touch wood - I have a June 2011 model - no big issues that usually make people need to dump a vehicle. I'd like a new vehicle, but keep going back to how there is nothing wrong with this truck and it would be a waste of resources to trade it or sell it (and I'd have to strip out my TRD Pro suspension to resell). It only has very minor ankle biter issues that all manufacturers have.

The V6 will easily do 80mph, but your mpg will suffer drastically.

Yeah, definitely wouldn’t be towing anything at those speeds :). That’s great mpg! I would drive ~60 but posted limit here is 70 and avg speed without traffic is 80. Generally I drive 75.

Now that is a beautiful truck. I love these cuz they remind me of my 06 Tundra that I had. Traded it in to get my wife an 07 Suburban. I was ok with that though because the turning radius suuuuucked on that truck haha.

I have a 2015 Tacoma and I love it. I would go with 2015, earlier models had faulty air pump issues that were resolved with the 2015's.

I added a Gentex mirror that has the temperature displayed on the mirror. The OEM plug is hidden in the overhead console to power the mirror also. Plug and play solution. A vendor on here sells the kits.

    Meh,
    1) My '05 runs flawlessly, only repair was upgraded wheel bearings which is a common issue for all 2nd gen yr models
    2) Aftermarket radio with front and rear cameras
    3) I do like the 12' facelift but fairly easy to convert to 12' front end if needed
    4) none. Texas tacoma

OP, don't avoid certain year models just because of hearsay. It all depends on the owner and the regular maintenance on their vehicles regardless of year models. I do recommend test driving both a 4cyl and a 6cyl to see if there's enough difference to sway you to either engine, especially if you plan on adding larger tires or armor without regearing the 4cyl.

2013 Has the most bang for the buck as far as options and problems go.
    I'd steer clear of 2016 but I'd be comfortable in a 2017+
I wouldn't go below 2011 due to frame issues and the amount of verification of warranty etc required.
    2014-2015 obviously are safe bets.
