I'll be visiting my local sand dune park next month, and there is a rather formidable sand dune that must be climbed initially to get into the park.

I have a '15 DCSB OR with the e-locker anytime mod, and brand-new Dynapro 265/75/R16s. I will be airing down the tires to 15 psi.

Regarding this first hill climb, what is the preferred method? 4HI w/locker so I can build speed and momentum, or 4LO w/locker and ATRAC?

Any input would be appreciated. I'm kinda new at this.

    Thanks

Id say 4hi and just don't stop what ever you do!

One can never have too many light bars.
Keep your revs up and when in doubt, floor it.

Answer. Get a UTV, put paddles on it and have a blast.

just got a simple lift on her
    sad, but true.

can be done in a truck effectively, but you will break shit after hard duning.

obviously your just going to cruise around in the dunes, you will be fine and have fun. but a UTV beats all.

Sand needs wheel speed and momentum. Always stop on a down hill pointed down hill. Bring a shovel and a strap. Speed works in the dunes.

Why has no one mentioned airing down before hitting the sand?

There'll likely be whoops at the base, mob through those as fast as you feel comfortable and charge it in 4hi.

If you lose momentum, stop, backup and try again.

As already mentioned it's all about momentum.

    Yep. Silver Lake

And one clarification, since I can run my rear locker in 4HI, is it recommended that I do so? It seems appropriate to me, but just checking.

Awesome. I was just out there last month. It's pretty great. Your Taco won't have any problems of you air down and stay on the gas. The entrance hill isn't too bad, just a lot of whoops so have to be careful to not bottom out too much.

    Have fun. Post pictures!

Definitely momentum. When I was an LEO years ago myself and another officer took a PD Ford Expedition out into some desert washes. It had 4WD but was as stock as could possibly be. And those Expeditions are heavy unwieldy beasts. Never got stuck though. Granted a desert sandy wash isn't the same as the Sand Dunes!

Slow and powerful digs a hole. Fast and nimble doesn't sink.... so long as you don't make sudden tight turns.

I go to the dunes a lot.....

4 low, 3rd gear, no trac, no locker, go as fast as your shocks will let you and don't stop till you're on top....

4 hi doesn't have enough power for the hill climbs and you have to remember to turn off trac...

If you stop, let off the gas, don't dig in, back all the way up and start over...

265 are small for the sand, but at 15 psi shouldn't be that hard, the stocks and bouncing is the biggest problem....

Sand is about maintaining momentum at the right speed.. trial and error......

    Silver lake dunes..
