I had a set of the geolander on A 99 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel and they were awesome tires. I could get 20mpg out of that big ass truck and the tires did great in the wet and snow. I will most likely get a set for my truck when the stocker’s wear out.

    Haha!

My co worker has wildpeaks on his gladiator and it’s a really nice tire. Feels more grippier and has deeper tread. Ko2 is a very good tire but IMHO it’s a bit outdated. Wanted to try something new for a while now.

Recently switched from the Falken Wildpeaks to the Toyo AT3.

No real difference in MPG. Road noise might be a little better on the Toyos.

I've been happy with the 265/75R16 Cooper Discover AT3 LTs in "C" load. Good road manners, quiet, severe snow rated, and handles the type of camping/dirt roads I go on well. They also make a (lighter) SL rated version with the Discoverer AT3 4S.

Are you getting 60k miles or so with some of these sets?

I went from the stock wrangler adventure kevlars 265/70r16 to a set of Toyo AT3 SL-rated 265/75/16. I obsess about tire choice so I'll share my thoughts.

    - The AT3s are noisier than stock but they are very well behaved, balance well. They track straight, wear well. They give more of an on-centre feel since the shoulder is more square than the rounder oem style wrangler kevlars or toyo a30.

    - They made about a 0.9" height difference, which put my final drive ratio lower a bit (6th gear highway less rpm thus). That is a plus on the gas mileage side, unless it put my rpm too low (unlikely)
    - also worth noting I have a 6MT so final drive is already higher (i think 4.10 or 4.30) than most comparisons (since about 5% of tacoma producition is stick)
    - also the wrangler kevlar oem tires are the lightest highway AT 265/70 you can find about ~30-32 lbs if i remember. The lightest AT tire in the same oem sizing (265/70r16) in an SL (i.e. not a LT designated C or D or E rated) is about 39-40 - 41 lbs which include the Toyo AT3, Geolandar AT G015 (apparently they are great tires). KO2s, Duratracs, etc... are older and heavier designs. Cooper AT3 are also about 40-41lbs but I don't think same level of QC. Wildpeaks are about 43-44 lbs comparatively.
    - considering the above two varables, I added 0.9" height, and added + 10lbs per corner
    - I lost about 2-3 mpg (went from about ~21 mpg to about 18-19mpg)
    - in metric terms I went from about 9km/L to about 7.5km/L

    - another variable I couldn't control is winter gas... I measured my stock tire OEM gas mileage (22) in june, and measured my AT3s on winter gas.
    - most people report that you'll lose about 2 mpg or 0.85 km of range for every litre of gas you use, if you go to reasonably light AT tire, while also sticking with oem sizing
    - also worth noting at tire weight doesn't affect cruising as much as it affects stop and go

So sorry to type so much, but I like to share info. I don't know if I am correct though.

Also P.s. Last thing, after a year or two on Toyo AT3s, I want to go back to a less aggressive tire because the Taco is so poorly insulated against highway noise in the first place. I mention this at the end because OP wanted to know about gas mileage. The quietest tire wins out if you are like me and have to drive 3 hours to get to a decent trail. Common 'wisdom' (loosely) is that if you have a noisy vehicle, any noise of similar level is masked behind the ambient road noise. So in the Tacos case, its already noisy so who cares if you get a slightly noisier tire? Well ... masking just means its hard to tell sounds apart. In reality adding noise under the noise floor just increases amplitude. Hence why ipods etc.. have a hard limit volume option, since you can crank you headphones to a dangerous level on an airliner just to be able to hear something over the jet engine. OK back to Tacomas... even the best, quietest tires like Toyo AT3 are still noisy and make long long highway trips not as pleasant.

Last thing, there's some other tires out there to check out if you want to go with a well-behaved capable tire:

    - Nokian Outpost AT (replaces the Rotiivaa)

    - Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT - the ones that come on the 2022+ PROs and OffRoads i think, they are the wrangler adventure kevlars just with a more aggressive sidewall. There are perfect for anyone that wants to keep OEM noise and spec but have more aggressive-looking tires. You probably need to get them from Toyota (see 2022+ Pros for part #s) since the Goodyear website only has the non-oem versions which are completely different tires. They are different than the 2021 and prior oem tires. There was a set of takeoffs on kijiji last week for 800cad.

    - Toyo Open Country HT which is less aggressive looking than AT3 but 90% quieter and optimized for highway (I had them on my FJ).

    - the eponymous Michelin LTX at2 ... humble but capable, quiet, and good rolling resistance

    - Continental UltraTerrain

    - Pirelli makes a good AT apparently

Best of luck. Also thanks for reading!!!

+ for Michelin - Defender LTX M/S. Still running stock on my taco but I ran defenders on my old sedan and those things are awesome in gravel and snow, low road noise. I plan on grabbing those for my taco in the near future from costco. Currently $826.88 at Costco w/ a $150 discount for the set + install.

As far as gas mileage goes, I’m stating to get 18 recently with stock. Idk why

I went from OEM tires 265/65/16, to FW AT3W 265/75/16 (the 4? Ply), to KO2 285/75/16 since November. Road noise increase and MPG decrease from OEM to FW. So far, the difference between the FW and KO2 is nominal (notwithstanding the slight lift). I don’t have a dog in the race (read: I don’t give a shit about tire loyalty and am immune to cognitive dissonance) so I’m probably the least biased person here.

I went with the Pirelli Scorpion all terrain plus in 265 70 17 on my 2021 sport. Look good, priced right, and have handled the snow very well. Notice no mileage difference from stock Firestones. I would buy again.

In the past few years I have Grabber ATX's, Falken wildpeak AT3's, BFG AT's, Toyo AT3's, and Yoko G015's. All SL rated. On a 4Runner but still.. Grabber ATX's were great compared to the stock dunlops. Awesome in the snow, great off road, and great treadwear. A little noisy over time but not awful. Wildpeaks.... I wound up sending back to Falken under their ride guarantee. Made in China, I swore one was square and on a road force balancer it had a good 1.5" hop in it. The other 3 were out of round too. It was like a paint shaker on the highway. BFG's had always been my go-to tire for the last 25 years. And they should have been great but they wouldn't balance either. So on to Toyo AT3's. The tire shop couldn't balance those either. But a trip to the dealer and a road force they were nice and smooth. For about 7k miles. Even with 5k mile rotations and a perfect alignment they wore awful. Took them off at 22k miles because I just couldn't take the vibration and noise any more. Put on Yoko G015's and holy cow smooth as glass. And great in the snow. Wore really really well too. My Tacoma has new but crappy General HTS60's on it now. It is getting BFG Trail Terrains on Tuesday. Dealer is swapping them out as they can't get them to balance. Hope those wind up being a good tire. I had the old BFG Trail T/A's 20 years ago on a truck and I loved those.

Thats interesting about the Toyo's, I've never had them but I've never really heard anything negative about them. I've always ran the BFG'S A/T's on my Broncos and yes the are a great tire.
I'm going with the Toyo A/T III on my Tacoma instead of the BFG's because I have the 2.7L and am trying to keep the weight down, the Toyo's are about 8 lbs lighter

I went the aggressive route and have no regrets. I mean who the fuck wants a Highway tire on an Off Road truck!

C load 265/75/16 Duratracs for the Win!
