Ive been a Mossberg fanboy my whole life, until I just blasted some clays with my friend's Benelli Nova. They are under $500 bucks, but I want to hear what else compares before I drop the coin on a new 12ga.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on something like a shotgun. Mossberg, Remington, Benelli, etc. I've had lots of shotguns and that list includes a Benelli M4 Tactical. I thought it would be the bee's knees but it turns out it wasn't a revolutionary shotgun. Don't get me wrong, it was a super badass shotgun but scatter guns are rather limited. Spending 4x on one will not net you 4x the performance or even twice as much for that matter. The Nova is a great shotgun for the price tag so if you have the coin... go for it. You probably won't be disappointed. I tend to favor Remington due to the reliability for the price tag and the availability of parts and what not. For pump I like the 870 and for semi-auto I dig the 11-87. They're solid and they perform well w/o breaking the bank. Your Nova will run just as well if you do your part.

I almost picked up an 870 today from my local shop but it felt like a piece of iron, so heavy. I just had heart surgery and while I'm totally able to shoot, weight is the name of the game when it comes to these cheaper guns. I'm gonna hit Cabelas on Thursday and hold a ton of them. Thanks for the advice, the 870 is not outta the question especially with that price tag.

Remember that more weight can also help with felt recoil. A super light shotgun will put you on your butt w/o some exotic recoil mitigation measures.

Nova's not a bad gun at all. I've shot a friends a few times. I have a Remington 887 and a Benelli M1 super 90. Both of them are great guns also.

I've got several, browning A5, Rem Versamax, and an 870 express mag. The 870 express is the best bang for your buck anywhere. Easy to clean, and doesn't have a complicated action. Fewer parts=less problems

I have (2) 870's, an 1187 and a verasmax tactical. The verasmax is BY FAR my favorite shotgun. It is so smooth and shoots like a dream. The felt recoil is nothing compared to the others I have or shot before. Its a few extra bucks, but IMO worth every penny.

Without a doubt the versamax is the bomb, but they're over a grand. So best bang for your buck...?

The question is what is the purpose of the shotgun? Home defense, range toy, competitions? Also what price point is in the OP's budget?

If knowing what I know now about shotguns, I wouldn't have bought my 870 or 1187 and just combined the $ and got the versamax instead. To me it's really that much better.

Love my Winchester 1200, but they stopped making them in 2006.
Very close to the Rem. 870.

The M1 is a semi auto only. You're thinking of the M3 that can be switched between both modes. I wish I had bought one of them also but never did.

I ended up buying a used Benelli Supernova in black, having my local shop check it over tomorrow. Pretty happy with my purchase. Someone asked earlier it's purpose, mostly shooting clays but I live in a state that has some Wildlife Management Units where it's shotgun/muzzleloader only for deer so I'll be able to put a slug barrel on there if I want to chase some urban does.

Last night we went through a box of clays and my Mossberg 500 was having jam after jam and at times the shell extractor wouldn't even bite onto the cap and pull it out. It's clean, I think she's just worn out and old. It's too bad because that thing weighs like 5lbs but kicks like a fu*king mule. Glad to retire it.
