Right now it's between the Remington 700 SPS and the Savage 10FP-RS

As far as a heavy barrel not being good for hunting that would depend on if you are worried about weight. With the SPS Tac is it a 20" barrel which cuts down on the weight. Savage is a great gun for the money. Haters will hate but I can say that there is nothing wrong with savage rifles. The accutrigger is great to build fundamentals and in all honesty all bolt action rifles are going to be reliable. Just be sure to break it in to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Id go to a gun store and hold as many rifles as you can in your price range. Esp the two that you like. If one is cheaper then the other and you like the both the same. Get the cheaper one and then buy a better scope. Some rifles also come with scopes but they are usually kind of crappy

Yes the varmint is a heavy barrel and a long barrel, so if you hare hunting where you are going to be packing it around, You may want to look around a bit more. Also, the stock on the varmint is complete junk, highly suggest replacing it.

Another bump for a Mosin-Nagant. Back in the day you could pick them up for $100 at sporting goods stores and a box of 20 rounds was $5.

Have a tika t3 lite. 300wsm. Affordable rifle, made my sakko, great gun. I'm all for having total variety of rifles, I could give a list of everything I have and like them all, but of I were to add another caliber, I'd buy a tika again.

I have a Remington Model 7 7mm-08 that I love to shoot. I reload my own ammo. Shoot 140 gr Serria Game Kings with 40 grs of powder comfortable with plenty of knock down power and great for the range as well. Mine is stainless steel with synthetic stock. Leupold VXII 3x9x40 great little gun

You can get Mosin-Nagant 91/30s for $65 to $75 for a WWII vintage round receiver through places like Souther Ohio Gun and others. I bought a spam can of 400 rounds for $80 from Cheaper Than Dirt last month. Hex receivers cost a bit more and the sniper repros run from about $400 to $600 depending on where you buy them.

IMHO, if you are looking for a bolt action to have some fun with, this is the best option going.

OP, That 700 with the muzzle break wouldn't really be worth it. You can get an SPS at Dick's for 589. The muzzle break will only make it louder and it's more money.

If you get the Varmint or Tactical it will. The Tactical has a faster twist for heavier bullets and a shorter barrel. The Varmint has a longer barrel and slower twist for pushing light bullets fast.

Here's what my SPS has turned into, lol. Started as a 223 Varmint.

I own the same rifle, an excellent caliber for all things hoofed up to caribu. Excellent for distance shooting and light recoil, lighter then a 308.

The Rem 700 platform in 308 is tried and true, but you may find it less then comfortable shooting all day at the range. Adding weight through the stock and the barrel will tame this, if it is an issue for you.

Any bolt action by Savage at your price point is a winner. They produce for the money the most accurate out of the box rifles today.

But if I am shooting all day long, and having fun it is because I am behind my Ruger 556, AR-15 (223), or my Savage Model: 16/116 FCSS chambered in 22-250. I love my Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70, but you won't shoot that all day with out a stiff drink.

As for scopes you get what you pay for and I tend to stay in the $400 + range, which is still solid entry lvl until you break $1000 +, but optics are everything.

That said I have also shot, hunted, and abused a Simmons for years and it is an excellent scope for the money.[IMG]

And don't forget, GET OFF THE BENCH and shoot!
