Hi guys, After driving my tacoma prerunner for a week, the only complain for me is the brake. So weak. I mean how could Toyota decide to use a drum brake on the back wheels. I was thinking if I could convert from the drum to the disk. But after I read a lot articles here, I decide to just replace my front rotors and pads to a better one. So my question is what's the best rotor and pads for the 1st gen prerunner? Toyota OEM or some other brand. Anyone has experience?

    FYI

anyone reading any post about rear drums

if your brakes are 'weak' it is not the fact the rears are drums

look elsewhere for the reason brakes are -weak-...like the actual
braking system components, lines, braking surfaces, age of fluid,
age of master and abs system...all the stuff that makes up the system

    ^^^ What he said:thumbsup:
I don't know what the best is, but I would advise against ceramic pads. Couldn't get rid of them fast enough:( The rubber lines get soft, expand during braking giving you a soft pedal:eek:

Anyone seen a link that has working pictures? I'm interested in this upgrade. Seems very cost effective (Substantially less as a DIY than a normal brake job at a shop) and kinda fun.

For a kit with instructions take a look at this - you can open the PDF instructions from this page - http://www.lceperformance.com/Front-Big-Brake-Upgrade-Kit-Tacoma-1995-2004-6-Lug-p/1055203.htm

There are several threads here that describe what tundra parts to use and modification of brake lines (note the brake lines from the above kit are sold separately and are specific to the tundra calipers)

I considered the tundra brake upgrade since I haul a boat in the summer - but instead used the Rock Auto discount from this site (see the vendor section) and went with new rotors and pads - high carbon rotors from centric and AKEBONOACT436 pads

Although this link doesn't have pictures it does describe the various parts if you were to build the kit yourself using tundra parts (along with part numbers) - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tundra-brake-upgrade-just-a-few-questions.253055/

One of the links in the above thread has some photos of the parts and a write up - http://stouffer.me/M3/tacoma-big-brake-mod-tundra-brakes/

I think his talking about rear brakes. How are they weak there is no weight back there you will get no more stopping power than what you have now for your rear drum breaks.

Up grade your front brakes, they do almost all the stopping.
