Aloha @Looking for TRD Off Road,

When I lived on the Big Island from the 80's when I owned my car till 2008 I had Geico and still have them. Full coverage for both financed and non-financed cars with higher coverage to protect myself and occupants cause, let's face it there's a lot of uninsured/underinsured motorists out there.

Here is something I learned to reduce your premiums from a family member who retired from the industry.

Post education degrees, current career title, multiple car discounts, business driver or leisure driver and daily driver is key when seeking quotes, comprehensive deductable also 0, 100, 250, 500 or 1000 etc is key. I have 0 now cause it was only a 15 dollar difference which people don't bother to look at. Know what your car comes stock and oem with like abs, TOYOTA safety sense, factory alarm, airbags, curtain air bags, navigation, dash cam front and rear all these things help to reduce your rates. Most insurance companies will use your VIN and it will populate the basics and that's when you ask about the discounts wanting to make sure its not overlooked.

A recent study conducted by the Consumer Federation of America found that some insurance companies charge anywhere from 12% to 45% less for auto coverage to customers with a college degree. In addition, drivers with graduate degrees or doctorates often pay less than their bachelor’s degree counterparts.

Not surprisingly, there are some who are upset that better-educated drivers get lower rates. The CFA’s executive director, Stephen Brobeck, claims that the higher rates for people in working-class jobs place an additional strain on the finances because jobs without a college degree tend to pay lower wages.

So why exactly are auto insurers charging higher rates to less educated drivers? The answer is simple: because they tend to be riskier drivers. And statistics bear that out.

It looks like education will continue to be a factor in setting auto insurance rates for the near future. So how can drivers who haven’t graduated from college keep their premiums low?
    Here are a few suggestions:

    • Look for discounts. Unions, trade groups, and auto clubs often offer car insurance at a discounted rate for its members.

    • Keep your driving record spotless. Accident and moving violation history are still one of the top determinants for auto insurance rates, so drive safely and responsibly.

    • Drive fewer miles. Cut your annual mileage by carpooling, taking the bus or train, or telecommuting to your job. You’ll save money on your premiums as a result.

    • Tweak policies. You can cut your insurance costs by raising your deductible, dropping non-mandatory coverage, or bundling policies with a single company.

    • Contact Auto Insurance Specialists. They will comb the market and find you multiple quotes for coverage, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs, at a price that won’t hurt our budget!

Hope this helps as it has for myself and others whom I've shared info to or with.

Noa! You are such a helpful person. I'm glad you said that you stick with Geico. I have Geico on my old truck. I was just checking with them on line to see how much adding the new truck will be and it seemed so much that I thought it might be a good time to check around to be sure I'm getting the best rate.

    Thanks!!

    You're welcome!
By the way if you call them I found when speaking with an authorized Hawaii insurance agent the quote provided was generally lower then the one on the internet.
Also, don't forget about if you have Costco or you have a degree or whatever your title is "rank and file" for your profession is also gets you lower rates. Example using my wife being she is a GM for her company that dropped it. Do they check "no". Same with your degree. They just want to hear it and you're rewarded for it, plus they stand by multiple car discounts which was solid for us.
Best of luck and don't forget you can change it up on what you want your policy to be and don't as well.

I had progressive for years but switched after Hurricane Iniki, then everybody's premiums went up, I own a house, went shopping around and Statefarm was the cheapest when bundled, home, hurricane, auto....also if you have a house, get an Umbrella policy for 1 million and you can lower all you liabilities and get even cheaper premiums. The umbrella is only hundre something a year and that saved me a couple hundred every 6 mos for everything else......check it out, also when I got my 17 Taco they said Toyotas are cheaper to insure with all the safety ratings and repair costs.....good luck

Yes Sir! So true. I have an umbrella like yours on my home and its 174 for the year and over a million dollar protection and lower premiums and savings. Can't go wrong, but not many people tap into an umbrella for fears of sticker shock or no knowledge. I just glad I went with it. GEICO hasn't done me wrong and I'm happy
