Title. There's been a major uptick in CC thefts in my area after being a non issue for the longest time.
I think it's time for me to get some cat guards.
    What do y'all recommend?

A third gen isn't as susceptible as a second gen because the primary cats are attached to the engine, but the secondaries are still vulnerable. A lot of effort for less reward, but they're stealing them off of little Mitsubishis so there's no telling.

Cat Security makes good shields - we got one for my wife's last Prius after we found the heat shield removed and sitting in the driveway.

    Oh look, another mod....

Agreed. Any one that you install is the best, because it will help prevent thieves. MillerCat, CatShield, Talon.... They're just names. Pick one that is budget friendly to you and available ASAP. The sooner you get it installed, the better off you'll be.

No cat shield is perfect - they are not armor. They will not prevent a determined thief with the tools and the time.

They are an effective deterrent simply because to defeat them the thief needs both more tools and time.

Good point. I plan to replace the screws with torx head screws in order to hopefully slow them down if not totally deter them.

Talon for me. I have the trd pro front skids. Talon fits like a glove. It’s 1/4 inch aluminum too like the trd skid

Lots of info on this topic in the forums. As mentioned above, the biggest mistake is waiting too long to buy one. I went with MillerCat and have no regrets.

x2 for Talons Garage. 1/4" like my PRO skid. Doubles as a trans skid. The security bolts are pricey but they are stainless and even if you break out the nipple it's an octagonal shape so an Allen or Torx are not a good fit like most of the shelf security bolts. The side wings are a nice touch too.

If you already have skid plates (I have budbuilt) then you can fashion something up like I did. I used rci cat wings and used the long skid plate bolts for mine (connected the two pieces together for the angle shape). Not perfect but it looks factory and it covers the entire gap. Can't reach the bolt unless you put your entire arm in from behind the frame. Like others said....slowing them down maybe enough deterrent.

This let's me continue to use my skid plates and have some protection to the cats.

For those in Texas, we have a really good company called ADD Automotive that does just this and only for Toyotas. Got mine on today. They were amazing. They babied my truck and the finished job was very clean. They use proprietary bolts as well that you cannot remove without the custom bit (they provide you with one). Fits perfectly flush against OEM TRD plate if you’ve got one.

Dumb question. So I went back to look at my cat guard and it seems there’s a big gap on the left exposing .. part of the cat? Not sure. Thoughts? Is this guard useless or is that not the main part of the catalytic converter? Or maybe it just makes it impossible to remove without bending the cat.

this is fine, thieves need to access both ends of the cat to cut, the shield covers half of the cat and they know they can't easily steal them
