Hello all, i am looking for advice on what brand to use when replacing the clutch master cylinder and maybe the slave cylinder too. I have replaced the master cylinder twice in about a year and I don't want to do it again.

Last two times I have used the O'Reilly Auto Parts #PTQ CM1197 (Master Cylinder) from PowerTorque (does not say reman) and they do not last. The part is <$25 after core return. Dealer wants $123 for master and $65 for the slave cylinder. Are they worth it or is there a different brand I should buy?

Here is a little history on the truck... If you see something else which could have caused premature failure please let me know...

    2001 Tacoma 4x4 2.7l.

First replacement was done at 97,240 miles on 8/28/2012. The hydraulics would lose pressure at stop as if she was letting out the clutch. Pumping the pedal in neutral helped temporarily. That night I flushed the fluid with fresh and bled the system under vacuum. Couple days later problem returned and I bled it finding air but no visible leaks. That lasted a few hours before symptom returned. Not knowing which part was bad I replaced both clutch master and slave cylinders. O'Reilly had them in stock (CM1197 & CS2194) for under $50 after core charge.

Problem came back in March but I took a gamble that the issue was the master so on 3/21/13 at 99,368 miles I replaced master only under warranty. Everything was fine?

A few weeks ago we started hearing noise in the pedal like and this morning it was out again, requiring pumping of the pedal to maintain pressure. Truck has 100,956 miles and I am thinking I should buy the dealer part for $123.

I got 165,000 miles out of my OEM master cylinder (had to just replace it).

I replaced it with OEM because, well.... I got 165,000 miles out of the original one.

FWIW A master can leak internally and not show on the outside. A slave will always leak to the outside and you will see it. This applies to brake master and wheel cylinders/calipers as well.
I would second OEM replacements. Buy your parts from one of the online dealerships such as
    http://parts.camelbacktoyota.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214329
    or
    http://tps.toyotaofdallas.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214074

$88 for a master at Camelback. If you have the time and you use an online discount dealer, email them and talk shipping (mostly for multiple part orders). They like to "stack" shipping charges. Example..........1 part ships for $5, 2 of the same part ship for $10 in the same box etc. This can add up real quick.

Thank you both. Factory parts it is.

I hate to spend that much, but if it means not doing this job again for a very long time the cost will be well worth my time.

Well I wish I knew that when I replaced both of mine.

Even with my friend's shop discount at Boulder Toyota I still paid $120ish for the master and $55 for the slave
