I mean, to be fair, until the late 90s when the big 3's small blocks got replaced by the LS/mod motor/Mopar 4.7 lump of crap, they weren't too far off from the mid-70s.

And as to the thread necromancer's inquiry... hells naw to both of those. I doubt I'd pay $10-15/qt even if they were the best oils on earth. I don't know that Amsoil isn't, but I don't know that it is either, and I don't care for MLM. And Royal Purple, on top of being outlandishly expensive, always seemed disturbingly not-viscous to me. I can't recall hearing of an engine failure attributed to it (nor any other choice besides "what oil? It's supposed to have oil?") but I'm not paying $30-40 more per oil change to see if I can find out for myself.

Castrol Edge HM from wally world @ $25 a jug for me, and usually Napa Platinum/Wix XP filters. Hell, I used to use Rotella T6 in my 1st gen 3RZ and old Subaru cuz it was also JASO MA rated and I could use it in my bike and only keep 1 oil on hand, and never had any issues... although I decided to stop that as it's apparently not the greatest thing for catalytic converters due to some of the additives.
