I'm a fan of the TRD cat back exhaust, just enough rumble with an oem fit.

Exhaust tone/note/"drone" is a very subjective topic. Whats sounds best for one, may drive another crazy.

I went with a very aggressive set up, MBRP 3" cat-back and I put a 4" tip on the end of it.

    https://mbrpautomotive.com/index.php?page=products&part=S5338AL

If you read the forums enough you'll see some folks who claim to have hated this set up SO much they threw it away and went back to stock. Do NOT expect the low rumble of a big block V-8, the 6-cyl has a unique sound.

Is my set up loud? Yes
Do I disturb neighbors when I start it at 5AM? Not one complaint, yet
    Does it sound good? Subjective
Is MBRP the best option? For me, at this time, Yes.
Is there "drone" at hiways speeds? NO

Regarding install. The worst part is getting the OEM system off and that is because it is one single piece. I backed my truck up onto car ramps that allowed me more wiggle room underneath. The longer you wait to do this swap, the more you will have to struggle with the rubber mounts and exhaust bolts. I did my swap at 600mi on the truck so, removal/reinstall went quick and easy.

    Good luck

I have had my stainless Gibson cat back for a year. Love it and only cost me $236 after sale price and a rebate. Deeper tone than a TRD which costs twice as much.

Any exhaust that improves ground clearance is the best. My MBRP does this for me and sounds decent. Nothing is going to make it sound really good as stated above.

I went with the Borla. Sounds great, no drone, and similar in design as compared to the TRD. Cheaper, too. Seeing how it's an authorized option from the factory (dealer install) makes me think they probably designed the TRD version. The tailpipe is obnoxious, though.

Are you saying if you have the tube that an aftermarket exhaust is better? I run a Flowmaster super 44 and it sounds good, but I’m wondering if I should go back to stock due to the sound vibrations. The vibes from the rumble are annoying at times. Thoughts?

I took the TRD exhaust off of my 2015 Tacoma and had a local shop shorten the pipe in front of the muffler to fit my 2018. I think it actually sounds better than my 2nd Gen's set up. It's a lot cheaper than a 3rd Gen TRD exhaust.

I enjoy my TRD exhaust that came on my 18 Pro. And I’m one to always alter the exhaust on my vehicles. But this one is a keeper for me.

    For now........
