You're partially right in your recollection. Toyota *did* come down on guys selling the extended warranties over the internet due to complaints from other dealers.

Toyota did NOT however prevent anyone from buying one out of state, the buyer just had to physically show up at the dealer. I know folks who'd make arrangements in advance and stopped by during a road trip or business trip to get a Toyota factory warranty from dealers outside of SouthEast Toyota's region (who mostly push the SET-associated FWS warranties).

It appears some dealers are resuming remote sales more quietly than last time; probably to avoid Toyota causing them problems.

The best extended warranty, if you think you need one is this....
Put $50.00/week in and investment account..... If you ever have an issue after the 36 mo. warranty, you should have more than $7,800.00 plus interest.... Use that... if you don't have any major warranted issues, you just saved a bundle toward your next new truck...!!!:thumbsup:

People keep getting hooked up! Both Brian and people purchasing have sent me messages saying thank you - apparently his pricing continues to be very competitive.

He does take a little bit to get back to the initial request - but once that's taken care of everything else seems smooth sailing.

I get my extended warranty from Auto Exam. I had to use it once on my 08 taco, never had a problem. Much less expensive than the dealer warranty.

do these warranties become void when installing aftermarket parts? IE lift kits, bumpers, sliders etc?

You off course need to read the fine print to understand what is and is not included in the coverage. Warranties are typically not monolithic things with a binary "exist" vs "void" status.

Strictly speaking, they're supposed to show that the modification in some way affected/caused the failure you're trying to cover. In practice it can sometimes be a matter of you fighting to show there is/was no effect. Put on a lift and tires and you're probably not going to have an issue with getting a water pump covered (if it's a covered component) but don't expect them to cover an issue with the rear differential.

Thats what I was thinking. Just worried they would do everything in their power to show HOW it caused the problem and me fighting with them to show it didnt. Still worth it IMO.

I think a lot of it depends on the dealer you typically use and what sort of mods you're planning to do down the road. Will/do they go to bat for you to get the warranty work approved or just convey the denial and ask if you want to pay out of pocket.

"worth it" is a personal subjective matter you have to decide for yourself. Extended warranties are insurance policies and overall tend to make more money for the issuer than they cost them. On a purely numerical basis, the probabilities are against you in most cases. Same with gambling and lotteries; yet people line up hoping Lady Luck will come their way.

Whether you go with one or not, I'd suggest waiting until the factory warranty is nearly done before you consider buying an extended. Situations can change in 2-3 years and maybe you won't be keeping the truck as long as you initially thought. Easier to not spend money than to seek a refund. :)

Shouldn't need to buy an extended warranty. I thought these Tacoma's were dependable..

You new here? Everyone's saying they're gonna fall apart around you hitting a pothole at 30mph the moment the odometer clicks over to 36,001... :)

By worth it I mean peace of mind. Def not going to do it till that factory is close to done. But, given the 3rd gen is a makeover from the previous gen, and what people have been complaining about, myself included, it seems to be a smart investment until we know more about the longevity of these machines.
