I have a 2.7l prerunner running 285/70/17 cooper stt pros. As I’m sure everyone knows every time you hit a slight hill with the 2.7l it downshifts and the engine screams. I have been looking into regearing and as of right now I have an 8 pinion gear 4:56 and was wondering what would be the best gear ratio for me or do I already have the best? Minimal off-roading.

Imo I’d stay with what you have. But if you do want to change 488 about as low as I’d go.

There are several gear ratio calculators out there, where you enter your axle gears, speed, tire size, etc... and it calculates your engine rpms.

I would do the calcs for your STOCK setup, and then input your current tires and see what gears will come close to match your stock rpms. It’s likely going to be either slightly over, or slightly under stock. Under gear it (higher rpm at same speed) will probably be better, but thats a personal choice.

4.56 with 285's in my auto 3rz 4Runner is great. Don't be afraid of 4k rpm or even higher, most of the power is up high 3500+ the transmission is just using it.

Also, OP, I have 4.88's with my V6 Auto and it made a world of difference. But i also was originally with 4.10's.

oh, I dont disagree. lol. 3RZ is the grandchild of the infamous 22RE and the 5VZ is the son of the 3.Slow :(

You do realize that going to lower gears just makes the engine turn even more rpm's. You'll have a little more power with lower gears, but those tires just aren't that big and you already have pretty low gears.

I feel so bad for my truck going up a steep hill. I have 265/75R16s and pushing 3500 RPMs just to keep up with the semi trucks. Think I’m going to go down a size when I get new tires.

    You guys are srtio
thats my setup, plus my tires are insanely heavy Coopers (price was right) 70mph is uncomfortable, I tend to do 60 or so on highway and long hills blow. They are 4 cylinders though.... maybe we just expect too much from them

What size front coils do I need for this motor? I don’t want to regear. Teehee 99590875-65EB-4596-98B8-589662888E6A.jpg

I have the 5VZ-FE in my 4Runner and I love it but at the end of the day the 3RZ will outlast the 5VZ.

Not too jealous I've got both. (and my V6 even has a lil boost.)‍♂️

The truck still stays parked a lot more than the RZ runner.
