I totally nailed it! At least for the 278HP models: 19/24.

The subject was the Tacoma SR 4x2 and the correct answer would have been 20 city/26 highway.

Welp I guess this partially explains the reason for the derated (software limited) SR model.

[EDIT: removed my comment about mpg not being any better than the 3rd gen 4x4)

I expected this. The 2024 is heavier and has a larger frontal area. More weight and more drag is countering whatever tiny gains could be had with the 2.4L turbo vs the old 3.5L V-6. Plus, you could see the writing on the wall with the 2023 Highlander 2.4L Turbo vs 2022 3.5L. User results of Fuelly show the 2.4L is getting worse real world MPG.

I was thinking of replacing my 2017 SR5 in the next year with the 24 or 25 model, but seems like a step backward in economy. Driving from Philadelphia to Portland (Maine) yesterday I averaged ~27 mpg (according to the dash reading).

Now, when towing (our scout troop trailer, ~3,500-4,000 lbs), I struggle to get 12 mpg on level highway. I can't imagine a 4 cyl turbo would be any better.

If you can get 27 mpg out of your V6 then you're obviously great at slow controlled energy management. Knowing that I'd guess that you'd get better MPG with the 4 cylinder turbo because the issue with the NA V6 doesn't have enough ass (torque) to pull the 3500 lb trailer in high gear at speed.

I'm a 3rd gen Tacoma fan BUT the new 4 cylinder turbo is likely to be an improvement in every way. I have a Bronco w/2.3 turbo that's got some Get-R-Done and imagine the Toyota 2.4 turbo will be even better.

Well since you asked like that...

Perhaps because I didn't consider anyone would think the 2024 turbo 4 cylinder SR (derated to 228 hp and 243 ft lb torque) would be a step back from the N/A 4 cylinder (159 hp and 180 ft lb.)

My Fuelly average over five years is about 21.5 in my LB (with a cap) here in Wisconsin. From April to November I'm disappointed if I dont get 22 MPG per tank average in mixed driving. In winter, MPG is lower of course. The way I drive I am pretty sure I could milk 22-23 MPG average out of the new Tacoma. Maybe 25 out of the hybrid? I may never know since the latter does not come in a LB outside the Trailhunter trim :(

What year do you have where the EPA estimate was 27 mpg highway? I ask because the EPA records appear to show that 21/25 was the highest for the 2nd gen years:

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can comment on whether the EPA 're-worked' their historical numbers due to the 2008 testing standard changes which lowered tests results by 1-2 mpg.

Thanks. The 2006 2wd Toyota brochure indeed matches the numbers you mention 20/27.

It's interesting that fueleconomy.gov (operating under the EPA) has different values:

Actually, I do. Stock 2017 SR5 V6 4WD DCSB with an ARE cap. Also, I use cruise control judiciously (when not towing) and on this trip had it set at 65 most of the way. The drive home (today), I averaged about 26, but traffic and road conditions were different. I do this trip twice a year and usually get about 26.

    that sounds about right.
A few weeks ago My wife and I did a short road trip, about 200 miles. On the highway i had CC set to 85mph for close to 150 of those miles, RPMs were about 2K at that speed. I averaged 25-26mpg. It was all flat with no real wind.

That's very surprising since no 2017 v6 4wd Tacoma is rated over 23 mpg highway according to the green vehicle guide Gen3TacomaOBX mentions. Most models are 20/21 highway.

I occasionally get more than the EPA mileage rating when I have a tailwind and/or I'm going downhill. I have to go no more than 60 mph in normal conditions to get the EPA rating on my 4-cyl 2 wd Tacoma.

I might have also been drafting a bit off a few of the many tractor-trailers out there
