Did a quick google, brand new you're looking between $500-$1200 apparently. However I would also look at a used one from salvage. Good luck

Boy I don't see any rebuilt trannys for that price range. The ones I found seem to run about $1800 - $2500 which is about what I was expecting. Plus a 400-500 core charge of course.

Wait sorry, I did a super fast google search and wasn't even thinking. My dad's diesel transmission he just had to replace was 4k so it should've clicked in my head. I'm seeing kind of like an average of $1500 and some getting up to $2000. I'd call around and see what they say, they'll also be charging roughly $100/hour in labour and it's gonna take a good chunk of time to take it out and put it back in. I'd expect roughly $2500 all said in done, could be more, hopefully less.

Finding one in a salvage yard that is local is gonna Be very hard. Would this be the least expensive way to go? How about buying a rebuilt vs repairing the existing?

Depends on what a boob job, nails, makeup, etc. cost in your area. The no "D" part will also factor highly into the overall cost. Good luck and godspeed, let us know how it turns out.

A rebuilt tranny isn't bad if you ask me, I'd rather buy a new one if you can but rebuilt is fine. Getting yours rebuilt could be less or more than another rebuilt engine. Like Boone said, depends on what needs to be fixed on it. There could be another tranny out there that was cheap to rebuild because it had a minor problem.

I think I found a used one at a salvage yard 100 miles away. 70000 miles on it $900. From same tear too.

Just get a rebuilt or have yours rebuilt. You could also get a salvaged one from a ebay salvage listing.
I cant remember his name but there is also a member here who operates a salvage yard and will post an for sale thread fairly often for salvaged parts.

According to car-part.com there are about 10 of them close to me and they are $1000-$1500 in canadian bucks. Shouldn't be too hard to find salvages in any area, these transmissions rarely fail and tons of people crash their tacomas daily just like anything else. Good luck.

Would just putting in a salvaged one with 70,0000 miles for $900 be cheaper or better then rebuilding mine?

Not sure. With 270,000 miles maybe not a super long time what direction would be the cheapest?

If you were gonna put a transmission in it and sell it, I'd go for the used one. If you wanna keep it, I'd look for a remanufactured one or have yours rebuilt. The thing to remember is that a reman or rebuilt one will (should) have a decent warranty depending on where you get it from. Whereas a used one may have a 30 day "guarantee" where they will send you a different one if it has a problem... You have to pay to have it removed and reinstalled. These transmissions are pretty reliable and one with 70k should still have a lot of life left, as long as it has been taken care of... With a used/salvage you never know what you're actually getting. Basically it all comes down to what you want to do with the truck. A rebuilt or remanufactured transmission would sound better to a potential buyer than saying "yeah man, I just put a used transmission in it". Just my $.02.

What happened to it? 270,000 miles on an auto is pretty awesome anyway! Good luck

Think I'm going with a used one. Every shop I talked to said they are one of the best made transmission out there. Rarely see them fail
