    my good buddy has a an 870 in a very similar setup to my 500... we've found that the 500 seems to be a bit easier and quicker to load, but for some strange reason the 870 seems like it kicks more... havnt really noticed any difference in the cycling of the weapons though..

    yeah if seen the judge. of course the idea for that has been around for about 150 years or so. in the civil war there was a revolver. the Le mat revolver that carried 9 regular ball rounds and one chamber specially designed for buckshot or something equivilent.

    Not true...buckshot is basically like 9mm solid balls travelling 1200fps.
    Penetrate whatever till they run out of energy.
    you might want to check the pattern at a range consistent with how far a perp might be in your home...tighter than you think.
    Birdshot is just as damaging inside of 10yds on soft targets.
    00=8.4mm
    000=9.1mm

    Bird shot is not effective against human targets, because the small mass of each pellet prevents it from penetrating the skeletal system.

    The next time you go hog hunting, why don't you pepper one with your 12 ga and see what happens.

    If you ever kill a hog, you will notice a very thick cartilage layer around the vitals.
    It is difficult to penetrate and makes a hog pretty tuff.
    I still think I could make hamburger at 30 feet with #6 shot at 1550fps, which is what I shoot pheasants.
    I don't know humans that have that cartilage layer in their chest, but some might have it in their heads.

    At 30ft significant damage could be done, but the chances of neutralizing your assailant drop if you're using Birdshot instead of Buckshot or a slug.

    Unless you can find some empirical evidence, I'll be content to just disagree.

    Im pretty sure the sound of me Racking a shotgun would make some think twice, if not the sound of BOOM would make them drop to the ground.

    I would recommend putting the guns away and buying a big dog. You get a lot more out of a dog than a gun and the dog can be there when you are not. I am a 2nd amendment advocate, and own quiet a few firearms, but would have to be extremely psd off to shoot to kill and anything less puts me in jeapardy. I think a dog is a better defense value, certainly more rewarding than cold steel, and a better preventer of crime than an alarm system. Killing another person to save your TV is easy to talk about, but should be hard to do. Killing involves a lot of mental preparation, and if you point a gun at someone do not warn them, pull the trigger. But after that what happens you have to live with. Buy a dog. Save your life,

    you are exactly on with your comments! it is easy to talk about, however i feel that if someone is putting my families life in jeopardy it should be an easy decision and one that i would be just fine living with afterwards.

    and when speaking about bird shot, yes it would pepper up a person pretty good at the ranges we are talking about. one big thing to keep in mind though is that this person that is breaking into your house is obviously a criminal, which also leaves open the possibility that said person could be on some sort of drugs. ever seen someone whos pumped up on drugs get shot? its gonna take alot more than bird shot to bring them down. if i'm pulling the trigger i have no need to ask questions to the perp, thus i want them in a limp ball on the floor as fast as possible. heck i wouldnt think twice about putting all six rounds from my 500 or 15 rounds from my pistol in them before i stop, no real reason not to.
