For all those who also enjoy life behind bars (Mtb bars that is),

What are your favorite ways to carry bikes on your taco?
    - Pictures welcome -

I'm currently running a 1up hitch rack that I love but would like a solution that doesn't obstruct access to the tailgate. I'd like to avoid removing the front wheel of my bike as well but am open to this if I see other benefits. One last note, my truck is configured with the full cab and short bed.

    Thanks!

    I use a Yakima Holdup

    https://www.yakima.com/holdup

edit to add: no removing the front tires, but I does obstruct the tailgate as with any hitch mounted set up.. all though it does fold down

Thanks for the reply. And nice, especially with the built in bottle opener!

My 1up rack is similar however in the folded up position it still conflicts with the tailgate. This is really only a big deal if you forget and let the tailgate slam down on to the heavy aluminum rack. Hasn't happened but I don't put it past myself to one day forget

In the old days we just layed them on their side and piled them up in the pickup's bed.

Not sure exactly what you're asking. Let me get this straight; you load your pedal bikes up on your truck and drive to the trail?? I always pull my truck to the trailheads with my bicycle. Just tie a strap from the bumper up to my seatpost. It's definitely more exercise but I save so much money not paying for gas!

Never saw an Alta rack, that is pretty sick man!

The Raceface tailgate pads seem pretty sweet too and I'm definitely considering one. My question is, how do you secure your bikes and the pad going this route? Also do you recommend any of them in particular?

    Lmao, only the best..

As for piling the bikes in the back, I'm not a fan especially when the bikes are carbon and cost a pretty penny. But hey, it is a viable method if that's not a concern.

    Thanks for the reply!

I have the race face pad and would buy another in a heartbeat. You just have some cinch straps that wrap around the tailgate and hold the pad in place. The bikes can be strapped to the pad, but honestly gravity itself is plenty adequate. Mine go some pretty wild places and never had an issue.

Thanks for the help on this, I'll definitely start looking more seriously at one of the pads. Seems to me like it's the easiest solution.

By the way, really liking your setup! What mount are you using to hold the rooftop tent? - Hoping to do something similar next year for trips to Western NC.

It's a rack from C4Fab, but I think they stopped making it.

1up. Personally, I never forget to put the rack down before opening the tailgate because the consequences are too great and I don't want to buy a new tailgate.

It is a bit annoying when the bikes are mounted and interfere with clean entry/exit from inside the truck with a camper*. I'll eventually figure out a solution, but for now, I'd rather not spend $1500+ on a swingout rear bumper and then custom fab work to have a 2" receiver welded onto the swingout in order to mount the 1-up.

*camper means camper, not what everyone incorrectly refers to a fiberglass shell as.

I’ve got two Yakima mounts attached to steel tube, mounted to the front rail in the bed:

Taking the front tire off is lame, but I like being able to close the tailgate.

Which product is this out of curiosity? I like the idea of not having to remove the front wheel. I currently also use a tailgate pad but this looks like a good option when its just me. I also ride an ebike sometimes and it is a bit heavy on the tailgate.

I've got some Mob Town bed bars waiting at home for me mount on my Tacoma.
I plan on attaching trays to them to carry my bikes.
