two soft ties around the stem (a bucks worth of climbing webbing), with ~ 5 bucks worth of 2 clam shell straps in the bed just like a dirtbike, ass end swung over and my medium frame 2020 giant reign 2 fits with the tailgate up no probs.

Call me cheap, but all the MTB specific stuff is WAY over priced.

Nice! Yeah I've been on it about 5 years now? Still love it. Went 1x11 with a new wheel/tire setup but other than that it's pretty much as it came from the factory. Still crushing it.

if the hardtopper was modified yes. most toppers that have a lip that overhangs the top of the bedside would interfere

Been researching best ways to carry my bike/bikes. Don't want a hitch mount. Would prefer to mount over the bed and keep the oem tonneau shut and the bed free in case I need the space. Are there any other options besides the KB Voodoo or Mobtown crossbars?

Love the side mounts from @Nimble9 but want the bike behind the cab. I wonder if I could rig up/build something similar that sits on top of the tonneau instead of out to the side.

I am interested to see what these prototypes look like!
I also like those side mounts but wanted something in the bed so I ended up going with a Rocky Mounts driveshaft bed rail mount.
What would be great is a bed rail mount but with something that extends lower so a bike can still be mounted with a cap on.

I have tailgate pad on my truck for my MTB. The only problem is that the bike does move when i hit the bumps or making tight turns on highways.

I am looking to get Retrax Pro XR and get bed rack with bike mounts. I will have to look at what @Nimble9 has to offer.

Are you saying you want access to the tailgate WHILE you have bikes loaded? Are the bikes and rack just generally in the way or is the rack actually preventing you from opening up the tailgate all the way?

In either case, 1up makes a swing attachment that I think would work for you. I have no experience with it but it looks like it could be good.

I have been looking at them but i am afraid my bike wont be able to be locked down by their steer tube mount. I have a 2020 specialized enduro expert and its steer tube isnt deep due to the chainbreaker. did you have same issue or was your steer tube deep? I have reached out to the company because i really like that you can lock the bike down.

I mountain bike a lot :) RaceFace tailgate pad works the best for short trips. But for longer trips where I also need full use of the bed, I bought a 6 bike https://www.velocirax.com/ last year and it's been great not only on the truck, but also the garage storage it provides is awesome!

I use a Thule bike rack that will tilt away from the tailgate for some access.

    Only picture I could find.

I just lay my mountain bike down in my bed. When I'm not lazy I'll use my hitch carrier. I also have a fork mount on factory rail mounts but it's a pain in the ass to take my front wheel on and off all the time.

1UP Roof Rack with Flush mount and custom brackets from my Leitner ACS rack. Detailed thread here. This may not work for you since you want access to the tailgate - to access the tail gate I have to remove my BMC. Not a big deal and takes less than 30 seconds.

My gas mileage is bad enough I would hate see it with the bike mounted up there.
