So I have been hearing lately that the Tacomas need an airbox type design to meet full power potental with an intake mod.... Does anyone know of this theory or have any insight? I mean if this proves to be true I wasted my money on my K&N cone cold air intake.... and it must be switched out with somthing more efficent. So I have had my eye on a few set ups. Has anyone tried this Injen mass air flow box? Pretty nice looking but I wonder if its more than eye candy and better than my k&n setup..

you hear crickets because this topic has been discussed many many times, search... anyways you do not need an airbox type design for max potential. You will be fine with the k&n even (the filter is garbage though). you will not notice much power difference between intakes, all give you maybe a few hp and scream at WOT. URD has probably the best results IMO

I did searched on the injen mass air flow box and found nothing. The reason I was curious about the box was because even TRD uses a box design. I talked to a mechanic at a muffler shop and he told me thay switched out the exhaust, re-did all the piping, weled JBA's and put a cone style intake on a Tacoma and the customer was complaing that the power was not all that great. So they switched the intake out for a volant and it made a HUGE difference and really helped out all the other mods.

one of the main reasons for the box style is the filter will stay cleaner, though not by a whole lot. The only way I could see switching intakes and getting a very noticeable increase in power is if the first intake was installed incorrectly. Also be careful if you ever oil your filter, we have very touchy MAF sensors and they are not cheap.

I personally do not, the filter will not fit for me without a lot of dremel work to my grill (intercooler is in the way) but no many people that do and have installed a few. It is a very nice intake and would be using one if I could.

Yeah... 300WHP! Forced induction system, an intake is minor stuff for you.

Injen is great in the industry, guys that had them on their Nissan titans put down some of the best numbers...I don't think they make an intake for the v6? But for the 4 it has to be one of the best. I searched for an injen for the v6..link if they do please.

Just go on Ebay and do a search for injen intake for Tacoma 4.0 I was also loooking at the UDR intake too and those look like a really nice design. Only thing that worries about that one is what happens when you get stuck in a hard rain?

The Injen intake is going for like 350! thats a lot of green backs. The URD is going for like 230?.....

    A general question about intakes...

I have a hard time convincing myself that gas mileage will increase with an aftermarket intake. It seems that by de-restricting the intake and allowing more air into the engine, the amount of fuel will have to increase to maintain the same mixture.

So how can the mileage increase? Or, perhaps my logic is flawed...

The amount of fuel should then be tailored using the URD MAF calibrator. You will want complete combustion, to ensure that 100% of your fuel is generating power. If you plan on driving like a grandma, then your mileage could go up. If you plan on using the new HP to it's fullest extent, then your mileage will go down.

Bottom line, fuel efficiency is all about total engine efficiency. Each inneficiency contributes to the total losses. If your engine works harder pulling in air, then all your energy isn't going to the wheels.

urd will be fine in the rain, as long as you dont do any water crossings or anything.

Not sure why all the holes in the box. The reason stock filters are in a box is mostly to remain clean, and somewhat deter heat coming from the engine bay. Not sure how the injen is doing that, but oh well... There is not enough power to make a diff, go for sound and look, Thats what will make you happiest...
