It's not hard to beat sticker highway mileages if you drive ~60 mph or less consistently.

The EPA testers tend to test under ideal conditions and with really gentle driving. I’ve never been able to achieve the advertised fuel milage in any vehicle, but come close with techniques like the ones the other folks above described. I remember on my last car, it was a 2014 Impreza, my numbers were awful in the winter, and got much worse after I threw on a roof rack. Nothing against the Impreza, I still bagged 29-30mpg at its worst. I figure with the taco I’d be lucky to get 22, but when I need my taco, it’s cause I can’t carry 500Lb of drywall on my shoulders that day.

Opie, you should file a lemon law claim and a false advertising lawsuit against the dealership, Toyota, and the USEPA. You can explain to them that you are an engineer, and this isn't fair. You were duped, hoodwinked, lied to, and they should make you whole again for their unscrupulous claims and practices.

Or go buy a Prius...I think it would suit you well.

I tried not to respond but I cant resist as a fellow ME. Yeah this is why people hate engineers and you sound like alot of people i went to school with or worked with that could to a diff equation in their sleep but... I wouldn't hand them a wrench.

    Also right now, winter gas.

I bought a Hyundai hybrid strictly for my work commute and actually get better MPG than what the sticker said. It's worth noting that I drive like an 80 year old woman on Sunday after church, I rarely use the A/C, I try to keep my tires set 5 PSI higher than recommended, and I draft behind 18 wheelers whenever possible.

I would NEVER expect anything more than absolutely terrible MPG from a Taco.

In both my 2017's & 2021 TRDOR DBL Cab's, I got/get between 18 & 19mpg (summer) and 16~18mpg (winter) with mixed city and highway driving. I normally run AC year round, no bed cover, and completely stock. AND I drive like my grandpa. These things dont sell because of good gas mileage, they sell because they are reliable, great looking, and get the job done.

On my Tacoma, completely stock, I was able to get 21 MPG on a road trip, but it was all on backroads at no faster than 65 MPH. You can get those MPGs, you're just not going to enjoy driving the truck to save a few pennies.

I do find it odd that someone would be surprised by the fuel economy of a vehicle that's been in production for 6 years. OP must have purchased without any research.

At some point you have to take a step back and think to yourself, maybe I should trade my Tacoma in on a Prius... this would solve your issue here.

Naaaaah - intelligent, educated people with advanced degrees are well known for doing tons of research, especially pertinent research that is peer-driven from similar test cases in the real world. Like Fuelly - which says a 3.5 doublecab averages.......oh wait 18-20 mpg. Hmmm, oh well, but the spec sheet on the window says different, so I guess you just go with that.

19.3mpg vs 22mpg is roughly $33/month @ $3/gal gas if you run through a tank a week. <$400 a year. My hourly rate to be a Karen on the internet is too high to waste that much time on something like this.

He would probably run to the Prius forums to complain that he is measuring 19.7 cubic feet of cabin space instead of the advertised 20.3 cubic feet.:rofl::rofl:

drove mine to MN from FL and average a hand calculated 23.8 mpg doing 70-75 mph and its a TRD OR that has highway tires on it ( not for long). At times I was getting 24.5, but heavy traffic ATL and a crash in northern FL that had us at a stand still for 1 hour hurt the overall. My combined mpg runs right around 20.5 so I am happy.

Inadequate break-in procedure created less than ideal piston-ring seals. Inefficiency results and mileage suffers. I would sell the vehicle and try again.
