For $7.70 I picked up the Brinks spare tire cable lock set. The kit included,(1) 2 inch weather proofed Brinks keyed lock with (1) 4' 1/4 steel cable with weather coating.

I purchased it at Wally Mart and installed it last weekend:D
The cool part is I ran the cable over the tire and through the frame and blocked access to the lowering controls for the spare.:locked:

    Cable lock set: $7.70
Time to instal: 5 minutes total
Piece of mind that my spare tire is safe:.....PRICELESS:D

How strong is this cable? I snipped a cable lock with my set of small bolt cutters like it was nothing a few years ago. One of the reasons I don't bother with them. Also, how is the lock protected? Last thing you wanna do is lock your spare tire like that, have winter snow/ice/salt/sand seize the lock and you can't get the tire down when you need it.

I bought one of these after my spare was stolen. There's a keyed collar that goes over the lowering mechanism and one that fits around the end of the cable to prevent it from being cut from underneath ($38):

The lock is weather proof...and I packed it with white lithuim grease once I had it in place. The cable can not be snipped with a pair of dykes:D

That's good to know! I had a Pop-N-Lock for the tailgate that got so packed with salt and sand after 1 winter I couldn't even get the key in. Luckily I left it unlocked all winter or I would have had one hell of a time getting the tailgate open. Would hate to run into the same situation on some dark road with a flat, and the spare locked in place.

true...honestly i guess it would take at least 2 takes with bolt cutters. the one i used was a masterlock brand weather cable and a weatherproof THE CLUB padlock. I did see masterlock had a bolt cutter proof cable that was about an inch in diameter.

Like many have said before if a theft wants it, they will get it. but with it being visible i would hope it would be a deterent and would move on to the next truck.

^Exactly. Why make it easy? Do everything you can to secure your property.
