    Like, so many.
I never like to say which model is best, because it's different for everyone and there are too many variables. I'd start with deciding on a budget for the truck then look for the lowest mileage truck that meets your needs. If you can get some of your "wants" as well within that budget, that's a nice bonus!
ETA Also, take opinions with a grain of salt as almost everyone says the model or year or gen that they have is the best.

Done by me: decals, plastidip, and vinyl. More to come. Not done by me: Icon front/rear suspension; Total Chaos UCA’s; Method wheels/34” Falken tires; Prinsu cab rack/LED light bar; V1Air compressor piped to a 2.5 gallon underbed tank; Pelfreybilt front/rear bumpers; Smittybilt front winch.
I started with a 2001 PreRunner, went to a 2015 PreRunner TSS, then a 2017 SR5. Now I’m back with a 2015, but in a 4WD Sport version. They were all 6 cyl double cabs.

Not a big fan of the transmission in the 2017 at all, and have seen more than a few
complaints about 3rd gen transmissions having the gear hunting I had.

Absolutely love my 2015’s though. There may not be as many bells and whistles as a 3rd Gen, but I’m fine with that.

i wouldn't rule out any 2009-2011 model years. If you can find a well maintained truck that has already had the frame replaced it would be ideal.

I have had many Tacomas, and 4Runners. Four years ago, traveled 455 miles to buy a 2004 PreRunner from original owner, all docs. It now has 189775 miles on the odo, and up to date on all maintenance. It is rock solid. Three weeks ago, sat down with a sales rep, checked off what I needed on a new Off Road Tacoma. Build date, 7/14. Thought about the Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger.
Because of farm activity, not needing our 4runner anymore, 2018 SR-5 4X4 with 30885 on the odo, dealer gave me $36K for it, and added $500 military discount. We paid $36757 for the 4Runner in March '18. Traded the 4R for the new Tacoma, had to pony up some cash for the difference.
There is nothing out there that will ROI better then Toyotas, in this market range.

Depending on how old of a truck you want a T100 is the best. So much more useful than any gen Tacoma and more comfortable, too. I am of course biased, but of any vehicle I've driven my T100 is my absolute favorite.

A good rule of thumb is to buy the last year of the cycle (gen). I bought an 04 and it’s been an awesome truck.

Crazy how big trucks have gotten this is about the size of my ‘13 access cab 2wd.

My 2014 has a clock on the dash. However, I think the 2013's are the last ones to have a temp gauge in the mirror IIRC

Do the 14-15 also have back up camera in the rear view mirror? I prefer that location for to even though it’s a small screen

My 2014 has the backup camera screen in the dash. I believe 15's are the same.

They are indeed. I didn’t even realize the 13 had it in the mirror until I test drove one recently.

First gen are just goddam sexy little trucks and they look amazing on 33s.

Second gen still has good styling and are tough AF. Also, I own a 2013, so clearly 2G is best.

Third gen is like someone drew a tacoma from memory, while resting on their laurels.

My backup camera is on the dash. I think I prefer it there since it's what I'm used to from other vehicles and it's a larger screen. YMMV

As someone who's owned a 3G, I'll say that they get a lot of shit for nothing. There were a few things I didn't care for, like the giant hood or the constant shifting, but overall my 19' was a good truck. Definitely better than the competition.

With that said, I think my 2014 matches my style a bit more and it has some sentimental value since a family member sold it to me. I do think the 2.5G Tacoma is the best version, but the 3G's are great too

Nice. But if had them, it would confuse me. I can see myself trying to use the wrong key. I left that wrench in the grey truck, dang it which one?
