I wish I had a paper version of ALL the trails I plan to visit, that stayed up to date and were easy to fold.

That’ll never happen so I guess I’ll have to learn this Gaia. :annoyed:

That's because ALL users are recording their tracks and Gaia doesn't support specifying what type of activity it is, so you're looking at people walking, skiing, running, biking, motorcycle riding, side-by-side, paragliding, swimming, et al. Gaia isn't about you finding 4x4 tracks easily.

This isn't their fault. This is an issue with government, liability as well as the different administrative forest GIS employees and capabilities of their team. For example, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest has NO MVUM map at all. Not digital data that could show up in Gaia. Not even a paper map that they were legally required to have back in 2006.

Turn off the public layers and focus on the main content - map layers.

MVUM shows only the legal motorized routes. If you are not on them, you're illegally driving around in the forest, so keep that in mind. That is IF the MVUM data is there for your forest in Gaia in a digital form. I am assuming you are saying that trails have "disappeared" from the paper MVUM, which means they have been decommissioned. Not only are there fines for driving off-route, but this will lead to more shutdowns and decommissioning of roads.

I’m using it (part of XO full disclaimer). Operationally it’s similar to Gaia, which is no surprise as HEMA licensed the interface from Gaia and then provided their own map content/layers. I do have Gaia and use it for preferred map layers (the MVUM’s are great).

Second for CalTopo! I've got the free version of Gaia for iOS but haven't really had a chance to try it out. I've seen the premium version used before and it seems handy as hell. When I used to wheel my FJ80 I would plan the trails ahead of time and print maps from CalTopo. It has some great features for printing out routes. Call me old school, but a printed map isn't going to run out of battery. And, if you want to mark a point of interest or a new trail you found, you don't have to hunt for a button on an app (you just have to hunt for your pen). But that's just me. I definitely plan on taking advantage of Gaia this summer.

    LED's so far :-/
I just bought Gaia and so far it's a bit overwhelming with all of the layers and how to properly set the opacity and order them..I can get used to that.

However only on my laptop It's the only maping platform I have that is SLOW AF to navigate through the maps with any layer. All Trails, Google Maps, OnX offroad all perform just fine when scrolling through maps and zooming in and out. Anyone have this issue? Thinking it may not be the laptop of all other pages work better.

My wife was a big reason I bought the truck, so I try to keep her involved.

The mods to the rig have gone a little far outside her comfort zone, and she only likes to drive it snow wheeling now. But she loves sitting passenger while I wheel all day. It is something we do together, often.

Gaia premium 5 year sub for me. It did take me a while to get comfortable with t, but it's a powerful tool. I have a 10" tablet mounted on a ram mount so the maps are big enough for me to see easily on the fly.
